Cityscape News Article ImageA recent paper published by members of the UAB Department of Neurosurgery Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery examines the significant strides made over the past three decades in understanding and treating children with spina bifida.

The paper titled "What has changed in pediatric neurosurgical care in spina bifida? A 30-year UAB/Children’s of Alabama observational overview" presents a detailed account of the experiences and knowledge gained over the years. It examines the journey of pediatric neurosurgical care in spina bifida, highlighting the changing approaches and practices employed within the institution.

Through the analysis of extensive data collected over the 30-year period, the study offers valuable insights into the institutional advancements that have revolutionized the approach to treating children with spina bifida, ultimately leading to improved outcomes and better quality of life for these patients.

While hydrocephalus management and tethered spinal cord treatment remain at the center of neurosurgical care in spina bidifa, UAB and Children’s of Alabama (COA) practice a multi-disciplinary care model for affected patients. In 1993, UAB established its first spina bifida care program, making it one of the longest standing programs in the country, and by 2006, had gained recognition as a premier spina bifida care provider.

In 2012, UAB and COA created the Lifetime Care Model to ensure a seamless transition from pediatric to adult care and emphasize personal responsibility and health awareness, along with the crucial role of dedicated long-term support. The UAB Transitional Spina Bifida Clinic, one of the only clinics of its kind, is supported by the Departments of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Neurosurgery and Urology.
