Class of 2008

Joining the UAB Ophthalmology residency program class of 2008 was the start of an incredible adventure filled with camaraderie, mentorship, and the kind of excellence that turns education into a lifelong treasure. Looking back, what stands out the most is not just the medical knowledge gained but the lasting bonds forged and the upbeat atmosphere that made every day special.

Our resident cohort was more than just colleagues; we became a close-knit family, supporting each other through the challenges and celebrating the victories. The dedication and patience of our mentors created an environment where learning was not just a process but a joyous journey. The professors at UAB were not just educators; they were guiding lights who made the path to becoming an ophthalmologist exciting and fulfilling.

Since bidding farewell to UAB as a resident, life has been a vibrant mix of professional accomplishments and personal joys. In a group private practice in Vestavia, I’ve had the privilege of focusing on general ophthalmology while enjoying the blessings of raising two wonderful daughters with my husband, John.

The UAB Ophthalmology residency program taught me much more than clinical skills—it instilled in me the art of compassionate patient care and the importance of building strong doctor-patient relationships. These lessons have been the bedrock of my identity as a physician, making every interaction with patients a meaningful one.

Reflecting on impactful mentors, Dr. Lanning Kline emerges as a beacon of inspiration. His unwavering commitment to excellence shaped our perspectives and pushed us to achieve our best in every situation. A letter of commendation from Dr. Kline remains a cherished reminder of the transformative influence mentors can have on their residents, even years down the road.

The UAB residency program was not just about preparing us academically; it was a holistic experience that immersed us in a world of diverse pathologies and hands-on surgical opportunities. The Level 1 ocular trauma center at UAB Callahan Eye hospital provided a unique backdrop where residents actively participated in managing eye emergencies. The dynamic environment equipped us with the skills and confidence to seamlessly transition into our professional careers.

What truly sets the UAB Ophthalmology residency program apart is the upbeat energy and the unique setting at UAB Callahan Eye. The Level 1 ocular trauma center allowed us, as residents, to handle a broad spectrum of cases and actively engage in managing eye emergencies. The high-stakes, fast-paced environment not only provided unparalleled exposure but also made learning an exciting adventure.

As I continue on my journey, I carry with me the vibrant memories, the enduring friendships, and the unwavering spirit of excellence nurtured during those transformative years at UAB. The program’s commitment to shaping well-rounded, compassionate ophthalmologists has not only impacted my professional life but has also contributed to a fulfilling and joyous personal journey. Cheers to UAB Ophthalmology—a place where education is an upbeat celebration of growth, camaraderie, and the pursuit of excellence!
