Class of 1998

As a proud alumnus of the UAB Ophthalmology residency program, class of 1998, my journey in the field of ophthalmology has been both fulfilling and rich in experiences. Looking back, it’s the camaraderie with my fellow residents and the dedicated instructors who shaped our learning that stand out in my memory.

Following my residency, I pursued a retina fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, an opportunity that deepened my expertise in a field that would become my life’s work. Returning to my hometown of Lafayette, Louisiana, I’ve spent the past 23 years in a small private retina practice. The knowledge and skills gained at UAB have been the bedrock of my career, allowing me to navigate the complexities of severe ocular trauma—a vital aspect of my practice.

One of the standout lessons from my time at UAB is the exposure to the treatment of severe ocular trauma. This hands-on experience has proven invaluable in managing cases independently and caring for patients referred after initial trauma. The program’s emphasis on real-world scenarios ensured that I felt confident from the early years of my practice, a testament to the program’s effectiveness in preparing residents for the challenges of the field.

While numerous instructors left a lasting impact, Dr. Luke White played a pivotal role in shaping my interest in retina. His mentorship was instrumental in guiding my career path, and I remain grateful for the inspiration and encouragement he provided during my residency. The relationships built during this period have endured, contributing to the sense of community that defines the UAB Ophthalmology residency experience.

The UAB program’s unique strength lies in its comprehensive exposure and the opportunity to train in an eye hospital with an eye emergency room. This distinctive feature sets it apart, offering an unparalleled experience for residents. The broad range of cases encountered and the chance to navigate an eye emergency room contribute to a robust learning environment, preparing residents for the diverse challenges they may face in their future careers.

Beyond the professional realm, my time at UAB holds a special place in my heart. It was during these years that my wife and I welcomed two of our three sons into the world, creating lasting ties to Birmingham. Today, as I reflect on my career and the years spent at UAB, I’m grateful for the solid foundation that has allowed me to contribute meaningfully to the field of ophthalmology. As I continue my journey, I carry with me the invaluable lessons, mentorship, and experiences gained during those transformative years at UAB.
