symposiumFor the first time, UAB Ophthalmology has successfully combined their annual symposium with the department's graduation banquet that made for a weekend of learning, insight, and celebration.




Symposium Weekend

The UAB Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences held an extremely successful 2019 Annual Symposium at the Grand Bohemian Hotel on May 31 - June 1. This was the 20th year of the symposium and included resident, faculty, and featured lectures on oculoplastics and retina.

The Alumni Sponsored Lecturer was Shu-Hong (Holly) Chang, M.D., Clinical Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Washington where she is active in research and teaching. 

G. Baker Hubbard III, M.D., M.D., the Thomas M. Aaber Professor of Ophthalmology at Emory University, served as the 2019 Helen Keller Lecturer. 


Graduation Celebration

The UAB Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences held its graduation celebration on May 31, 2019 at the Grand Bohemian Hotel. Each of the five graduating residents, and six graduating fellows, were joined by family and friends.

There were three awards distributed at graduation:

The Brass Apple Award is voted on by first and second-year residents honoring one graduating resident as an outstanding resident and teacher. This year’s recipient of The Brass Apple Award is Bernard Dib, M.D.

The Crystal Apple Award is selected by the graduating residents, and is awarded to one faculty member who has served as a mentor and advisor. This year’s recipient of the Crystal Apple Award is Jennifer Davidson, M.D.

The final award is the Class of 2019 Resident Appreciation Awards. These awards are selected by graduating residents who select a staff member(s) who helped them over the years. The Class of 2019 Resident Appreciation Award winners were given to Jeffrey Crain, M.D., Andrew Everett, M.D., Harriett Holmes, Dawn Noviello, and Walter Henley.
