Professor Shawn Gilbert, M.D., was recently named the department’s new executive vice chair. Gilbert is one among several UAB Orthopaedic Surgery faculty who is taking on a new position within the department following the appointment of Steven Theiss, M.D., who was named chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in February after serving as interim department chair since November 2017.

Gilbert has been at UAB since 2003, when he joined the then-Division of Orthopaedic Surgery as an assistant professor, and was appointed to his new position as executive vice chair of the now-Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in March.

“I’m excited to help in advancing and growing UAB Orthopaedics,” Gilbert said.

Gilbert said he hopes to stimulate faculty “growth and development” in this new role. He explained that he is especially interested in promoting the department on a national level in order to provide new opportunities for the faculty, as well as to attract additional faculty from other institutions.

“We have been eager to move forward as a department, and with Dr. Theiss as the permanent chair, and the support and resources that are now available, we have opportunities that we have never had before,” Gilbert said. “Now is our time to take advantage of them and make our mark on the orthopaedic community and UAB.”
