UAB Emergency DepartmentThe ongoing mental health crisis has taken a toll on healthcare systems across the U.S., leading to emergency department backlogs and a lack of timely care for individuals in need. In response to this pressing issue, the UAB Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology has taken a proactive step by implementing a revolutionary team approach to provide psychiatric coverage in the UAB Emergency Room, offering continuous support seven days a week. This initiative, which commenced in January 2023, has already yielded remarkable results in addressing the backlog.

Patients experiencing psychiatric crises often faced extended wait times due to a shortage of specialized resources. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, UAB Psychiatry partnered with the Department of Emergency Medicine and UAB Medicine leadership and devised a strategic plan to combat the backlog and ensure patients receive the care they need promptly.

Under this innovative team approach, a dedicated team of psychiatric professionals is available around the clock to provide continuous coverage in the UAB Emergency Room. This team includes psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, social workers, and other mental health experts working collaboratively to assess and treat patients in crisis. This approach not only shortens waiting times but also ensures continuity of care for patients, reducing the risk of relapse or further deterioration in their mental health.

“The impact of this initiative has been nothing short of transformative. Over a six-month period, the program has successfully reduced boarding hours by an impressive 60 percent,” says Adrienne C. Lahti, M.D., chair of the department.

Patients in psychiatric distress now receive the attention and care they require promptly, leading to improved outcomes and a more efficient use of emergency department resources.

One of the key factors contributing to the success of this program is the unwavering support it has received from UAB leadership. Their commitment to addressing the mental health crisis head-on and investing in innovative solutions demonstrates a dedication to the well-being of their community.
