The five-day conference, which began last weekend and ended yesterday, saw several wins for the department including a new endocrine surgery fellowship and resident awards.

Residents win at ACS

General surgery resident Laura Stafman, M.D., won first place in the Surgical History Group Poster Session at the 2017 ACS Clinical Congress. Stafman’s poster reviewed the first surgical atlas that featured pediatric operations, by a surgeon of the 15th century, Şerafeddin Sabuncuoğlu of the Amasya Hospital in modern-day Turkey. It illustrated surgical procedures of the time, divided into three chapters: Cautery, surgical operations, and fractures and dislocations.

Evan Garner, M.D., also a general surgery resident, won an Excellence in Research Award for his neurosurgery paper at the ACS Scientific Forum. These awards recognize research performed by surgical residents and fellows and encourage residents and fellows to participate in research during their training.

AAES approves new endocrine surgery fellowship, votes to hold 2020 meeting at UAB

At ACS 2017, the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons unanimously approved an application from the UAB Department of Surgery to begin a new endocrine surgery fellowship. The fellowship program will be eligible to accept new applications in the spring of 2018 and for a starting fellow to begin in the summer of 2019.

Thomas Wang, M.D., Ph.D., who will serve as the fellowship director, said he is excited about the new program.

Dr. Thomas WangDr. Thomas Wang"Our goal is to train the next generation of endocrine surgeons in the diagnosis and management of endocrine disorders, including thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, pancreatic neuroendocrine and gastrointestinal neuroendocrine diseases," Wang said. " By developing this fellowship, we hope to advance high-quality research in the treatment of endocrine diseases at UAB, as well as to help train international fellows in order that they may return and become leaders and educators in their countries of origin, providing the best possible care for a patient with endocrine pathologies throughout the world."

The group also voted to hold its 2020 annual meeting here at UAB. John Porterfield, M.D., will be the local arrangements chair for the event.
