Dr. Benjamin WeiUAB Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery Professor Benjamin Wei, M.D., has been elected to the Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine Faculty Council.

The Faculty Council Committee is considered the principal advisory committee to the dean of the School of Medicine and is responsible for providing written review and assessment of appointments, promotion, and tenure award for all clinical and basic science faculty.

“It is truly an honor to be elected and to represent our faculty on this scale,” says Wei. “I look forward to serving alongside my fellow committee members and working collectively to positively impact the School of Medicine and its many talented faculty members.”

In addition to his committee service, Wei is the program director for the UAB Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Program.

Wei specializes in robotic-assisted and video-assisted thoracic surgery, lung and esophageal cancer surgery, surgery for gastroesophageal reflux disease, paraesophageal hernias, and also esophageal motility disorders. His other areas of expertise include chest wall reconstruction for pectus excavatum/carinatum and organ procurement for lung transplantation.

Wei also recently performed the first robotic pediatric thoracic surgery at Children’s Hospital.
