Equal Access Birmingham, a student-run initiative in the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education of the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine will host a health screening at Avondale Park on Sunday, Sept. 22 in conjunction with the Magic City AIDS Walk and 5K Run hosted by Birmingham AIDS Outreach. This screening event is free and open to all community members as part of Equal Access Birmingham’s goal to provide healthcare education and address the needs of the locally underserved.
The screening will run from 4-6 p.m. Equal Access Birmingham will provide services including measuring body mass index, blood pressure and blood glucose levels. Medical students will offer education on the meaning of test values, any conditions for which participants may be at risk and resources for improving health. Physical therapy students will offer foot screenings for diabetics, as well as posture assessments. Optometry and dental students will offer eye and dental exams. All of these tests are provided free to the community to help individuals identify any particular risk factors that may require further medical attention.
In addition to community health screenings, Equal Access Birmingham runs a clinic every Sunday from 1-5:30 p.m. at the Church of the Reconciler, providing continuity care at no charge. To make an appointment at the clinic, call 205-259-8836.
