Ways to Give

The School of Nursing Office of Development and Alumni Relations works to create opportunities for donors to make meaningful gifts in support of our mission:   To take a strong and progressive approach in educating nurse leaders and clinical scholars, conducting research, and providing service.

Gifts help the School of Nursing accomplish a level of excellence that is not possible with state and research funding alone.

Partners in that effort include the School of Nursing Board of Visitors and Junior Board of Visitors and the School of Nursing Alumni Chapter of the UAB National Alumni Society, as well as numerous friends of the School. There are numerous ways to give a gift that will help shape the School’s future.

Annual Gifts

Annual giving provides UAB School of Nursing a strong foundation and vital operating funds for priority initiatives while generating much-needed assistance to improve and enhance academic programs, research, technology and other important campaigns as determined by the Dean. Gifts received through the annual giving program, whether designated or unrestricted, provide necessary resources for the growing needs of our School.

Class Gifts

Nursing Alumni celebrating class reunions may support the UAB School of Nursing’s programs, projects, or scholarships. This can be done in honor of their class, a beloved faculty member or class member.

Endowed Gifts

Endowed gifts are intended to permanently support students, faculty, and/or programs as designated by the donor.

Endowment funds are invested and managed by the University of Alabama, and the income from the gifts is directed toward a purpose selected by the donor. The University only expends income generated from the gift’s principal, in accordance with the University’s spending regulations. Income earned in excess of the amount spent annually is reinvested into the endowment so that it grows in perpetuity, providing “purchasing power” for future generations.

All gifts given for the purpose of establishing an endowment must be formally accepted by The Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama. Recognizing that such sums must often be accumulated over a period of years, the Board of Trustees generally is cooperative in working with a donor who wishes to spread the payments toward an endowment over several years.

A gift for endowment purposes can be an outright gift of cash, appreciated properties such as securities, real estate, or tangible and intangible personal property. Endowments can also be created through estate distributions by wills or trusts; as well as, beneficiary provisions, insurance policies, or retirement plans.

Gifts-in-Kind

Gifts-in-Kind are donated equipment or supplies that the School can use in its teaching programs. Tax benefits may be available.

Major Gifts

We appreciate the support of all of our generous donors. Donors who support the UAB School of Nursing through major gifts can designate their support toward a specific purpose or program that matches their personal interests within the University’s priorities. Major gifts may also lead to recognition opportunities which can either honor the donor directly or honor or memorialize a special person of the donor’s choosing. Please read about some of the UAB School of Nursing generous donors.

Memorial Gifts/Tribute Gifts
Giftsto the UAB School of Nursing can be given in honor or in memory of a loved one, colleague or friend.  This gift will be acknowledged to the person of your choice.   Also donations can be made to the School of Nursing to honor special occasions such as a retirement, birthday, anniversary, or other special occasion.

Matching Gifts

The UAB School of Nursing participates in a matching gift program to increase your gift’s impact. If your company matches the gifts of its employees, your gift may be made significantly higher, based upon your employer’s contribution. Contact your company’s human resources department to find out if they will match your gift.

Over 9,000 companies offer matching for their employees’ philanthropic interests.  When your gift is matched, you are recognized for the full amount of your personal gift plus the match!

Planned Gifts

A planned gift can benefit the UAB School of Nursing now and in the future. Planned gifts also have unique tax benefits for the donor offering the maximum personal benefits for charitable giving. Through favorable tax treatment, planned giving may offer you ways to make more significant gifts than you might have otherwise thought possible. Planned giving is merely a way to make a gift and also enjoy the benefits of federal and state tax provisions.

A donor may wish to consider making a deferred or planned gift to the UAB School of Nursing through a number of plans, including the following:

  • Life Insurance: By assigning ownership of an existing life insurance policy to UAB, a donor may qualify for an initial deduction approximately equal to the current cash value of the policy, and also may be able to deduct subsequent contributions to UAB that may be used for premium payments.
  • Life Income Gifts: Securities, money, or property may be irrevocably transferred to UAB with a provision that periodic income payments may be made for life to the donor or to someone named by the donor. After payments to the beneficiary or beneficiaries have ended, UAB uses the funds remaining in the trust for the purpose designated by the donor.
  • Bequests:  A benefactor may leave an outright testamentary bequest in cash to UAB or provide income for one or more individuals through a testamentary trust. UAB may also be named as the beneficiary of a residuary or a conditional bequest.  Bequests provide an investment in the future of the School of Nursing; they will fund programs, scholarships, and faculty chairs in years to come.
See below for sample will language:

"I give to the Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama for an on behalf of The University of Alabama at Birmingham $_______. * I request that it be used for ________ in UAB's School of Nursing."

* The bequest can also be funded through a designation of a percentage of your estate or through bequests of real estate, securities, or other assets.

UAB will be happy to provide further information about these or other charitable arrangements to fit a donor’s individual financial situation and charitable objectives. Because aspects of some giving methods are highly technical or subject to different tax consequences based upon the donor’s individual circumstances, UAB encourages a potential donor to consult with an attorney, accountant, or other qualified advisor. UAB welcomes the opportunity to work with these professionals to accomplish a donor’s objectives.

The Office of Planned Giving would be happy to discuss giving options with you or your legal or tax advisor.
