HahnSullivan UAB Grad PhotoUniversity of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing alumna Courtney Hahn Sullivan has received one of two scholarships from the Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses (APHON) to attend the Nurse in Washington Internship (NIWI). The scholarships were awarded to distinguished APHON members who have practiced in the field for two or more years. The three-day conference took place March 15-17, 2015 at the Westin Crystal City in Arlington, Va.

The workshop provided advocacy and health policy training, panel sessions with nurse advocates and congressional staff, and the opportunity to meet representatives and senators on Capitol Hill. Seventy-five representatives from 29 states and 31 nursing organizations participated in the event. Political and professional experience ranged within the group from novice to expert; all shared the common bond of nursing and interest to advocate for patients, nurses and quality health care.

Sullivan is currently the Coordinator of Outreach Nursing Development with the International Outreach Program at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital where she develops pediatric oncology nursing education programs in resource-limited countries. Sullivan earned her Master of Science in Nursing from the UAB School of Nursing in 2013. Click here to read about her experience.
