Shirey named to health care board

Serving two-year term on National Association for Healthcare Quality board

University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing Chair of the Acute, Chronic and Continuing Care Department and Professor Maria Shirey, PhD, MBA, MS, RN, NEA-BC, ANEF, FACHE, FAAN, has been installed as a Director-at-Large on the National Association for Healthcare Quality (NAHQ) Board of Directors.

Shirey will also continue to serve as Editor in Chief of the Journal for Healthcare Quality, NAHQ’s peer-reviewed publication which is the premier resource for scientific solutions in the pursuit of health care quality.

In her distinguished career, Shirey has held a variety of positions including bedside critical care nurse, nursing director and hospital vice president. As an educator, researcher and practitioner, she has focused on building leadership capacity for quality and safety.

She has been a member of NAHQ since 2004.

NAHQ prepares a coordinated, competent workforce to advance the health care quality profession, defines the standard of excellence and equips professionals and organizations to meet these standards. NAHQ offers the only accredited certification in health care quality – the CPHQ. More than 10,000 healthcare quality professionals hold this credential and are universally recognized as qualified in their work and in advancing the profession of health care quality.

The UAB School of Nursing is ranked 13th in overall graduate programs, among the top five public schools of nursing in the country by U.S. News and World Report, and offers innovative bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs, including the state’s only PhD in Nursing degree and a DNP degree offering BSN, MSN and Nurse Anesthesia Pathways; more than 10 specialty nurse practitioner tracks, advanced nursing executive majors in administration and informatics, and an Accelerated Master's in Nursing Pathway (AMNP) for students who already have one degree.
