UAB Sociology offers one of the nation’s leading online sociology MA programs — it was ranked America’s Best Online Master’s in Sociology program for 2023 by Intelligent.com. We build connected digital communities where students can interact with faculty and each other in courses covering everything from social theory to social data analytics.

A Road Map for a Rapidly Changing World

Whether you are an educator seeking to expand your teaching and research skills or someone who recognizes that knowing more about applied sociology can help you build a better career in business or the non-profit sector, this program prepares you to better navigate a rapidly changing world. Our Data and Society course offerings are truly an example of applied sociology for the digital age. They help students build the skills needed to transform oceans of data into useful insights.

A Fully Accredited, Totally Online, Non-thesis Master's Degree in Sociology

We deliver outstanding instruction from professors who care about you. What is more, we believe in the promise of digital technology to enhance lives by making graduate study more widely available than ever before. Our mission is to erase the barriers preventing many people from pursuing advanced study. The need for education is simply far too great to let things like distance or career responsibilities block access to graduate study, especially when technology can bring graduate school to your computer screen.

Our nine-course (30 unit) online Master of Arts in Sociology builds upon the experience and tradition of our outstanding on-campus graduate program, and our professors take full advantage of digital technology to create open and engaged virtual classrooms that encourage learning. In your courses, you will join a diverse group of fellow students from around the world who are united by their pursuit of learning. And you will come to build an online community of colleagues who support one another’s efforts to build a better future.

Designed for Professionals

This is a program tailored for professionals. A capstone project based upon your interests replaces the traditional thesis. Applicants are not required to take the GRE or GMAT. Course scheduling is structured to provide direct progression through the program. Academic assignments are often based upon the professional interests and goals of students, and instructors approach students as colleagues.

In our open, challenging, and yet supportive atmosphere, students rapidly learn the research methods, theories and perspective that form the nucleus of sociological practice. This makes graduate study in sociology precisely what it should be – a transformative experience.
