Department of Optometry
Welcome to the homepage of the Department of Optometry. Our department is located within the School of Optometry in the Henry Peters Building (HPB) on University Blvd, beside the Lister Hill Library. It consists of thirty full-time and a dozen part-time faculty whose mission is to contribute exceptional ideas in optometric sciences and clinical practice through research and scholarship, and to fulfill the teaching mission of the School of Optometry with education and clinical training of optometry students, residents, and postdoctoral fellows. In addition, our faculty is heavily engaged in professional service to the university, state of Alabama, region, and nation. Hence, many of the faculty are leaders on advisory panels, boards, committees, commissions, and other organizations serving optometric and other health-related clinical programs. Some are involved in even an international capacity.
Our faculty reflects the full diversity of optometric science and education and consists primarily of clinical optometrists, but also vision scientists, and ophthalmologists, who provide direct supervision and training of optometry students and postdoctoral residents. They provide clinical eye care and educational services in the several clinics affiliated with the School of Optometry. Our faculty members are widely published in the scientific and clinical literature. They write textbooks and contribute significantly to the world literature in the clinically oriented vision sciences.
I invite you to peruse these pages and sense the excitement and engagement that reflects who we are. Please note the commitment to the highest quality of optometric education given to our students, residents, and fellows; exceptional eye care services to the public; and meaningful service to the local area including Birmingham, and far beyond.
