SCOT Scientific Program Offerings for the 1997 Annual Meeting

Mitch Feldman M.D., FAAP

Once again, SCOT has several presentations planned for the annual meeting which are certain to be of interest to section members. To start, there is SCOT's first-ever tri-section sponsored panel presentation entitled: "Telemedicine and Wireless Technology/The World Wide Web". This program is co-sponsored with the Section on Transport Medicine and the Section on Critical Care, and will take place Saturday, November 1, 1997 from 9am to 12noon. SCOT's own Dr. Andy Spooner and the section on Critical Care's Dr. Barry Markovitz will start off with talks on "Medical Collaboration Via the World Wide Web". This will include a discussion of medical services available via the WWW. Next Dr. Thomas Abramo will speak on "Telemedicine and Wireless Technology: The future of remote medical care." This will be a didactic and interactive session with a patient presentation and discussion followed by real time imaging of an actual patient from a remote location. The morning will conclude with a Transport/Critical Care database workshop. Our section would like to thank our co-sponsoring sections and especially Dr. Bill Hardwick from the section on transport medicine and Dr. Brahm Goldstein from the section on critical care for their help in coordinating this special program.

From 12:30 to 1:30pm is the SCOT business lunch (reservation necessary through registration). From 2pm-5pm is our annual SCOT scientific abstract session. This forum for presentations of computer applications to pediatrics is one of the only (if not the only) such available to the pediatric informatics community. Note that this program was inadvertenly omitted from the Annual Meeting Schedule Booklet which was mailed with the June AAP News. This year we had many fine submissions. Since there are only 8 presentation slots available from 2 to 5pm, we were unable to include all of the abstracts in our afternoon program. The selected presentation abstracts will appear in a supplement to Pediatrics in September, 1997. Some of the abstracts which were not included in the program are printed elsewhere in this newsletter.

Monday, November 3, from 9 am to 5pm will feature the Pediatric Office of the Future all day workshop. This workshop has been given three times previously to packed crowds. Dr. Bill Zurhellen, a practicing pediatrician with an enormous amount of hands-on computer experience has done a wonderful job of assembling an intriguing collection of talks and demonstrations covering "medical records, patient education, physician CME, e-mail the Internet, medical libraries and more". Other SCOT faculty include Drs. Julius Edlavitch, James Lustig and Andy Spooner.

On Tuesday November 4 from 9 to 12 noon, a workshop titled "Advanced Computer Strategies for the Practitioner" will take place, featuring Drs. Andy Spooner (again!), Bill Zurhellen and Jim Lustig. Participants will learn "how to enhance patient care while simultaneously improving practice efficiency, cost-effectiveness and the bottom line"-
