James Rachels was a member of the philosophy faculty at UAB from 1977 unjtil his death in September of 2003. He was a tremendous influence on the department faculty and many generations of students and is deeply missed.

Publications

Dr. Rachels is the author of The End of Life: Euthanasia and Morality (Oxford University Press, 1986), Created from Animals: The Moral Implications of Darwinism (Oxford University Press, 1991), The Elements of Moral Philosophy (McGraw-Hill, 4th edition 2002), and Can Ethics Provide Answers? And Other Essays in Moral Philosophy (Rowman and Littlefield, 1997). He has edited seven books and published more than 60 articles.

 

Conference and Festschrift

There will be a conference in September 2004 at UAB in Professor Rachels' honor that will lead to a festschrift as well. Speakers to include Peter Singer, Ray Fry, and others. Check back for further details.
