3.7 Nepotism Policy


No family member may interpret policy and procedures or make work-related decisions regarding hiring, promotion, salary compensation level, job assignment, performance evaluation, discipline, termination, or any other issue affecting another member of his/her immediate family. Likewise, no UAB employee (including faculty) may interpret policy and procedures or make any work-related decisions regarding hiring, promotion, salary compensation level, job assignment, performance evaluation, discipline, termination, or any other issue affecting another UAB employee who is living in the same household.

Immediate family includes spouse, sponsored adult dependent*, son or daughter (including stepchildren), child(ren) of sponsored adult dependent, parent (including stepparent),
brother or sister (including stepbrother or stepsister), aunt, uncle, neice, nephew, grandparent, grandchild, great-grandparent/grandchild, first cousin, great-great-grandparent/grandchild, grandneice/nephew and corresponding in-laws.

Any variations or management plans appropriate to this policy must be documented and submitted to the Chief Human Resources Officer.  Future problems related to an approved variation should be referred to the Chief Human Resources Officer. 
According to Board of Trustees Rule 106, additional approvals at the campus and/or system levels are required before hiring members of the immediate families of the President, the Chancellor, and members of the Board of Trustees.


*Sponsored Adult Dependent -- a sponsored adult dependent is not a relative, is at least 19 years of age, shares a primary residence and has lived with you not as a renter, boarder, tenant, or employee for at least twelve months.
