Accrediting Organizations Policy

August 1, 2014

Background

UAB and its schools, departments, programs, and centers are accredited by more than 35 accrediting agencies, in additional to its regional accrediting agency, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). It is imperative not only that these accreditations be maintained where necessary for UAB to fulfill its mission, but that there be coordination within UAB as to the way the institution describes itself to these agencies and as to other matters on which accreditation depends.

Policy Statement

Periodically and otherwise as necessary, the Provost  and the SACSCOC Liaison require that deans and other academic officers at all schools/colleges (which as used herein includes the UAB Libraries):

(1) list federally-recognized agencies that currently accredit the school or any of its programs,

(2) provide the date of the most recent review by each agency, and

(3) provide copies of statements used to describe itself for each of the accrediting bodies.

In addition, deans are required to notify the Provost and the SACSCOC Liaison, as appointed by the Provost, immediately in writing if any negative action by an accrediting agency has been taken or is reasonably likely to occur, including a termination of accreditation by an agency or a voluntary withdrawal from accreditation by a school or program. Deans shall also provide a written explanation of the reasons for such termination or withdrawal. Deans shall keep the Provost and the SACSCOC Liaison promptly apprised of any developments in the foregoing matters and forward all correspondence with the accrediting agency, including final action(s). UAB is required to notify its accrediting body, SACSCOC, of such matters.

The foregoing information is also used by UAB’s Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Analysis to prepare UAB’s annual Facts & Figures description of the university.
