Summer Institute

What is it?

The Invitational Summer Institute (SI) is an intentional, multi-layered professional learning experience designed by teachers for teachers to increase educators, knowledge and confidence and capacity to help students learn 21st century literacy skills while mastering state standards.

When is it?

SI is held for three weeks in June Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 3:30pm.

Where is it?

The SI is held on the campus of the University of Alabama Birmingham.

What do you do?

Fellows engage in reading, dialoguing, writing, and viewing content related to best-practice standards in English/language arts and the content-areas. Fellows also develop and critique strategic teaching demonstrations. Fellows participate in hands-on technology lessons incorporating 21st century literacy skills into the latest social media and web 2.0 sites.

How are fellows selected?

Interested teachers submit a completed application and a resume by the deadline to Dr. Tonya Perry. You participate in a group interview with other candidates. The SI committee makes its decision based on your resume and interview scores.

What happens after SI?

After completing their SI work, fellows become Teacher Consultants or TCs. Teacher Consultants are involved in designing and implementing projects that promote and sustain the work of RMWP and by extension the National Writing Project.

Is this for English teachers only?

NO! RMWP strives to maintain a diverse group of teachers. We encourage all teachers K-12 to apply for the Invitational Summer Institute. All teachers from exceptional education to ELL are welcome to apply.

What’s in it for me?

If selected, you will earn college credit or be paid a pre-determined amount in the form of a stipend. You will join a network of over 150 teachers in the central Alabama region. You will be part of a national cohort of teachers who have experienced "a space for critical reflection so essential to good practice, [which] "causes a noticeable and great shift in all of my teaching,".
