  • Heustis Pennington Whiteside, Jr., MA, MSPH

    ​As Director of Sponsored International Programs in the Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Mr. Whiteside works with UAB faculty and existing and potential international partners to promote, develop, and facilitate sponsored international research, training, and service programs, and to facilitate communications and interactions between international programs at UAB and entities responsible for compliance and oversight.  Mr. Whiteside also serves as Executive Director of the Sparkman Center for Global Health in the UAB School of Public Health.  In his work, Mr. Whiteside has participated in the development and implementation of educational, research, and/or service programs and related activities the U.S., Latin America, the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Indian Subcontinent. Prior to assuming his current positions, Mr. Whiteside served in a variety of capacities at both the University of North Carolina and UAB Schools of Public Health and Medicine.  In 1994, he was honored by the International Health Section of the American Public Health Association with its Distinguished Service Award and in 2011 by the International Services Council of Alabama by being named to its Model Citizen Diplomatic Corps.
