  • Julie Gibbs-Erwin
    Associate Director

    Julie Gibbs-Erwin, B.S., B.S., MT(ASCP), is the Associate Director of The Southeastern Biosafety Laboratory Alabama Birmingham (SEBLAB) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Ms. Gibbs-Erwin received her undergraduate degrees from Auburn University after which she completed an Internship at St. Vincent’s Hospital School of Medical Technology in Birmingham, Alabama. In 1984 she received her Medical Technology Board of Certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathology. In 2008 she successfully completed the Biosafety Level 3 Safety Training at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University.
     
    Ms. Gibbs-Erwin provides leadership to the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) Biodefense Network Steering Committee and several network subgroups. She serves on the UAB Institutional Biosafety Committee and is a member of the American Society of Clinical Pathology and the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science. She has lectured at the International Conference on Biocontainment Facilities and spoken to numerous groups to promote research in support of the NIAID biodefense research agenda.
     
    As Associate Director of the SEBLAB, Ms. Gibbs-Erwin is responsible for ensuring administrative and operational activities are performed in a safe, secure and cost effective manner in compliance with relevant institutional, local state and federal regulatory requirements. She is responsible for developing and executing policies, procedures and training programs required to support the optimal performance of the SEBLAB. She is also charged with aiding in the recruitment of new users and assisting with grant applications that will benefit the SEBLAB.
     
    Ms. Gibbs-Erwin has 23 years of experience in clinical pathology and diagnostics for the UAB Animal Resources Program, where she was instrumental in establishing the Clinical Pathology Laboratory which she managed for 13 years. Her research experience and most of her publications focus on murine Mycoplasma disease and innate immunity.
