AGENCY NOTIFICATIONS

The NIH policy requiring single IRB review for multi-site studies goes into effect on January 25, 2018.  This will apply to grants, cooperative agreements, or contracts submitted to NIH on or after this date.  The policy will apply to NIH funded studies in which all sites are using the same protocol.  See the UAB IRB website for additional information and/or the NIH Single IRB Policy for Multi-Site Research .

The All of Us Research Program is a historic effort to gather data from one million or more people living in the United States to accelerate research and improve health. By taking into account individual differences in lifestyle, environment, and biology, researchers will uncover paths toward delivering precision medicine.

Single IRB Fees

The single IRB (sIRB) mandate is a set of harmonizing federal policies that require certain types of federally-funded studies that involve multiple institutions/sites to use a single IRB to accomplish IRB review and approval for all of the institutions. This information may also be useful for multi-site studies that are not federally-funded but that wish to use a single IRB.

 

Federally Sponsored Studies

Effective January 25, 2018, IRB Fees will be charged to Performance Sites that rely on UAB as the IRB of record. The new fees apply to new or competing grants or contracts submitted on or after January 25, 2018.

 

These fees should be incorporated into the grant or contract budget when conducting multi-site trials where UAB will be the IRB of record.  Per the federal policy, the additional costs associated with sIRB review should be charged to grants or contracts as direct costs, provided that such costs are well justified and consistently treated as either direct or indirect (F&A) costs at UAB.  Ongoing, noncompeting awards will not be expected to comply with the policy until a competing renewal application is submitted.

sIRB Fees and Grant Budget Scenarios

Scenario #1

A UAB PI prepares an NIH grant application which is a multi-site study (non-exempt) in which UAB, University of Michigan (UM), Emory (EU), and Johns Hopkins (JH) will collaborate. The grant will be submitted to the NIH in February 2018.

 

The UAB PI will need to contact the collaborating investigators to see if they want to participate in the project, and discuss the possibility of UAB’s IRB of being the IRB of record. The UAB PI and the investigators at UM, EU, and JH should each contact their IRB offices to see if this arrangement is agreeable. If all agree, then the UAB PI will let the UAB Institutional Review Office know that IRB reliance agreements will be needed with U M, EU, and JH for this protocol.

 

In the NIH grant application, the UAB PI outlines the plan for UAB IRB to be the sIRB, and that UM, EU, and JH will rely on UAB IRB. In this scenario, UAB is the primary awardee and the sIRB, so primary activities are charged within UAB’s indirect costs, while the secondary activities at UM, EU, and JH may be charged as UAB’s direct costs, which will be $1,500 each for the initial protocol review and then $1,000 for the annual reviews.

 

Protocol #1: UAB, UM, Emory, and Johns Hopkins

$0 for protocol and UAB site.
$1500 per each external site

 

Continuing Review (CRR)
$0 for protocol and UAB site.
$1000 for each CRR review of each external site.

 

Scenario #2

A UAB PI prepares an NIH grant application which is a multi-site study (non-exempt) in which UAB, University of California-San Francisco (UCSF), Cleveland Clinic (CC), and University of Miami Med Ctr (UMMC) will collaborate. The grant will be submitted to the NIH in February 2018.

 

The UAB PI will need to contact the collaborating investigators to see if they want to participate in the project, and discuss that UAB PI would like the Cleveland Clinic IRB (CC IRB) to the IRB of record, and the other investigators agree. The UAB PI and the investigators at UCSF, CC, and UMMC should each contact their local IRB offices to see if this arrangement is agreeable.

 

In the NIH grant application, the UAB PI outlines the plan for CC IRB to be the sIRB, and that UAB, UCSF, and UMMC will rely on CC IRB. In this scenario, UAB is the primary awardee, so all IRB activities are charged as UAB’s direct costs on the grant budget, which will be the CC’s rate for initial and annual reviews.  The CC will bill the UAB PI for the IRB costs and the UAB PI will charge the amount directly to the grant.

 

Protocol #2: UAB, UCSF, UMMC and CC

UAB PI must contact CC for the rates to insert into the budget and to get a letter of agreement to rely on the CC IRB.  IRB Reliance and Reviewing Agreements will be made prior to the commencement of human subjects review.

Richard Miller, PhD, Professor of Pathology at the University of Michigan Medical School, will give a seminar in the Nathan Shock Center seminar series on Wednesday, January 17th 2018, 12:00 – 1:00 pm, in Volker Hall, Lecture Room B. The title of the seminar is : Drugs That Slow Aging in Mice”.

A shifting landscape of federal research funding make university and industry partnerships highly attractive for both sides; however, opposing values and interests can make such partnerships challenging to manage.

 

Academic Impressions and the University-Industry Demonstration Project have teamed up to offer a series of webinars that will guide you through the nuances of these academic-industry partnerships.

 

This series is held every other Wednesday, from 12:00-1:15p.m. CT, February 7-May 2, and is FREE to all UAB faculty and staff. It will be of special interest to faculty researchers, research center directors, sponsored programs professionals, CFR professionals and tech transfer officers. January OSP Training Sessions – New: NIH Progress Reports

OSP has several new training opportunities coming up and additional sessions of training currently offered. You can register for any of these courses in the UAB Learning System (LMS). Space is limited, so be sure to register early for new courses.

NEW – NIH Progress Reports – At this introductory session, you can learn about the requirements and how to submit NIH Progress Reports.
When? Wednesday, January 24 – 10:30 am to 11:30 am

VA-MOUs - Come learn all about the NIH Veteran’s Administration (VA)-Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This session is an introductory course where you will find out: who needs a VA-MOU and why, how to complete a VA-MOU, when and why you need to update a VA-MOU, and when you should submit a VA-MOU to OSP.

Pre-Award Cost Sharing – This session provides an overview of cost sharing as a part of an application for funding, including definitions, types, criteria, related policies and procedures, and FAQs.

Overview of Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) Submission Process – This course is designed for those who are new to sponsored programs or new to UAB. This one-hour introductory course gives participants a general overview of OSP and helps them understand the submission process, including the benefits of submitting proposals early.

NIH ASSIST Single-Project Proposal Process – This training course demonstrates how to use the NIH ASSIST system to initiate and prepare a single-project proposal. This session is a 1.5-hour introductory course (1 hour presentation plus Q&A) that gives participants an overview of the process including requirements for using ASSIST, how to initiate and prepare a proposal, how to add optional forms, how to preview an application, and how to validate an application. After completing this course, participants can also attend follow-up courses including a lab to practice using ASSIST and NIH ASSIST Multi-Project Proposal Process.

FUNDING OPPORTUNTIES

The Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) Research Voucher Program provides direct research support to investigators throughout the CCTS Partner Network. Investigators may use vouchers to offset expense(s) for clinical and translational research services including clinical research nursing; biospecimen processing analysis and storage; study design and methodology; database management planning; informatics consults; and other CCTS-related resources.

In collaboration with the UAB Department of Radiology and School of Medicine, the CCTS is requesting pilot study proposals for research projects requiring human imaging on the Highlands 3T, PET/MR, PET/CT, CT, and/or Small Animal Imaging on the 9.4T, MRI, Micro PET/CT, etc. The intent of the Pilot Initiative is to promote pre-clinical and clinical research projects and so acquire data that can be used in publications and extramural grant applications. The Radiology Pilot Research Initiative will provide direct research support to offset expense(s) for pre-clinical and clinical research scan time and/or for the purchase of radionuclides and radiopharmaceuticals from the Cyclotron Facility.

We are pleased to announce the availability of two fellowship positions for post-doctoral (PhD) and clinical (MD) fellows wishing to train in the broad area of heart failure. We seek applicants who are motivated, demonstrate a desire to succeed, and have a long-term commitment to cardiovascular research in an academic environment. This is an ideal opportunity to obtain scientific publications and intellectual development that will lay the foundation for future successful professional development as an independent scientist. UAB's well-established NIH-funded investigators will provide a mentored experience critical to early career development.

Eligibility:

  *   If currently at UAB, candidate must be in good standing with the institution;

  *   No more than 5 years since having received most recent high level degree (i.e., PhD or MD);

  *   US citizens or permanent residents;

  *   Express a long-term plan and expectation to work as an independent investigator in cardiovascular research broadly related to heart failure;

  *   Commit to meet all obligations of the training program (detailed information to be provided at later date).

Application process:

  1. Trainee will either approach a mentor or mentor will ask a trainee about creating a research relationship, or either can seek guidance from Program Directors to be matched with a potentially interested counterpart.
  2. Trainee and Mentor together apply for entry into the program.

This is a recently awarded T32, for which funding initiated on April 1, 2017. The timeline is as follows for the second year of funding:

Each year the CDC releases a group of Special Interest Projects (SIPs) through the Prevention Research Center (PRC) Program. Applications are required to go through the UAB PRC – the Center for the Study of Community Health – for administrative purposes.

The 2018 Special Interest Projects:

SIP 18-001 Targeting Treatment Gaps: Describing When, How Quickly, And Why Persons with Epilepsy Are Referred For Specialty Care -- Findings from this study can inform health system interventions that can facilitate more appropriate and timely diagnosis and treatment to optimize health outcomes in people with epilepsy. Health system interventions based on the findings from this project may reduce barriers and speed up the diagnosis and the appropriate treatment of epilepsy so that patients with epilepsy receive the best available care.

SIP 18-002 Effect of Survivorship Care Plans on Cancer Survival -- This project will help improve care for cancer survivors by determining the health impact of survivorship care plans.

SIP 18-003 Enhancing Surveillance of Fluorosis -- This project can improve the measurement of dental fluorosis. In addition, findings could guide development of new examination protocols and innovative or new technology that may be more valid and reliable.

Pilot Feasibility Studies on Nutrition or Obesity-Related Health Disparities

UAB's Obesity and Health Disparities Research Center (OHDRC) (2U54MD000502) invites applications for pilot feasibility studies that focus on any area of research related to obesity-related health disparities.

Number of Awards: Up to three (3) projects will be funded.
Award Budget: Awards will be up to $50,000 for the entire duration of the project.
Award Period: The award project period is one (1) year.
Eligibility: NIH-defined New and Early Stage Investigators (Instructor, Assistant, and Associate Professors, as well as UAB-designated Research Scientists and post-doctoral fellows) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham are eligible to apply.

UAB’s Nathan Shock Center of Excellence in the Basic Biology of Aging announces the availability of pilot/feasibility (P/F) project awards for investigators with a research focus to aging with the goal of developing applications to the National Institutes of Health in the comparative biology and/or energetics of aging. The projects must utilize one or more of the three research cores of the UAB Shock Center, which can be found on the Center’s website (https://www.uab.edu/shockcenter/cores) and are briefly described below.  Applicants must consult with Core Leaders (see below) about the cost and feasibility of their proposed project prior to applying. Budgets (generally less than $10,000 although larger budgets are considered if fully justified) are developed in consultation with Core leaders and/or co-leaders. Awards are for 1 year. Applications from institutions outside of the UAB are particularly encouraged.

 

Note: Additional funds are available for studies utilizing Shock Center Cores and UAB’s Microbiome Core. For those interested in pursuing these grants, Casey Morrow (caseym@uab.edu), Leader of that Core, should be contacted.

 

Deadlines and Award Dates

Application due dates are January 1st, April 1st, July 1st, and October 1st, 2018.

Funding period: One year from award date.

 

Applications must include:

  • The hypothesis and specific aims of the project (1 page)
  • No more than one page of figures and figure legends
  • Additional pages allowed for important references
  • A one (1) paragraph statement (no more than ½ page) of how this research will impact your future directions in aging research.
  • The Shock Center Core and Microbiome Core resources needed, including sample number if applicable and approximate time frame (1/2 page)

UAB Shock Center Cores

  1. Comparative Organismal Energetics Core: Tim Nagy (tnagy@uab.edu), Leader. This core provides state-of-the-art instrumentation and analyses for quantifying energy balance and body composition in diverse animals, including measures of energy expenditure (via indirect calorimetry), food intake, activity, and core body temperature. Body composition analyses can be performed on living and dead animals. Learn about their full list of servicesand COEC fees.
  2. Comparative Mitochondrial Health Assessment Core: Jianhua Zhang, (jianhuazhang@uabmc.edu), Leader. This core offers state-of-the-art services to investigators to facilitate research and training on mitochondrial function and mitophagy as it relates to aging. The core provides expertise in molecular energetics and metabolomics techniques in a variety of species from yeast to mice. Learn about our full list of servicesand CMHAC fees.
  3. Comparative Data Analytics Core: David Allison, (allison@iu.edu), Leader. This core provides consultation in study design, research proposal development, and data analysis, including traditional, specialized, and customized analytical methods for scientists performing research on the basic biology of aging. CDAC also conducts high-level statistical investigations of secondary data to answer questions about the comparative biology and energetics of aging. CDAC works with investigators to develop new analytical tools and offers training in statistical methods for the comparative biology of energetics as it relates to aging.

Microbiome/Gnotobiotic Animal Core

The UAB Faculty Development Grant Program (FDGP) provides seed money for research and other projects designed to enhance the effectiveness, peer recognition, promotion and tenure of full-time faculty by providing funds to undertake new efforts for which money is not generally available. Strong preference given to junior faculty without substantial external funding; however, senior faculty may apply as long as the proposed project represents a new/distinct scholarly or research direction. The UAB Center for the Study of Community Health (CSCH), one of 26 Prevention Research Centers (PRCs) designated nationally by CDC, announces the 2018 Community Health Scholars pilot grant program, an initiative to encourage community-based participatory research (CBPR) by UAB faculty.

 

Three (3) Community Health Scholars will receive one year of pilot funding of up to $30,000 each for projects that address important health and public health issues directly relevant to local Birmingham communities. A project may be from any discipline on campus as long as it meets the following criteria:

  • Applicant Principal Investigators are UAB faculty at the Instructor, Assistant Professor, or Associate Professor level;
  • An established community partner organization actively participates in the genesis, development, implementation, andevaluation of the project;
  • The project can be completed within one (1) year, and;
  • The project is developmental in that it demonstrates significant potential for additional extramural funding in the future.

A NOTICE OF INTENTION TO SUBMIT A PROPOSAL – with Project Title, Principal Investigator, and descriptive paragraph of project  is requested by Wednesday, December 13, 2017. Please use this form.

 

The deadline for full proposals is January 31, 2018.

 

Awarded projects have an expected start date of March 1, 2018.

The DRC Summer Research Fellowship for Medical Students program awards up to 6 students approximately $3,600 for the minimum 8 weeks of active research; however, for each additional week the student will receive another $450 to a maximum of 12 weeks, over a period of time between June and August each year. 

The training period will include:  a full time summer hands-on research laboratory experience and a seminar program.    August 1-2, 2018, at the end of the fellowship, they will travel to Nashville, TN to present the poster at Vanderbilt University with medical students from other institutions conducting diabetes related research.  Travel expenses for this are paid for as a part of this fellowship. In addition, together with the chosen mentor, each student will be expected to prepare and submit an abstract of their work and subsequently present a poster and/or oral presentation for the UAB Dale J. Benos Medical Student Research Day in October 2018.

Save the Date—The American Diabetes Association 78th Scientific Sessions -June 22-26, 2018 in Orlando, Florida.

 

Abstracts that have been accepted for presentation (poster or oral presentation) at the American Diabetes Association are reviewed for the UAB DRC-ADA Travel Award every year during the month of March.  The award consists of up to $1,000 that can be used for travel, lodging, and/or registration but not for food or incidentals.

This award helps support travel to the ADA National Scientific Meetings for approximately 10 graduate students and post-doctoral fellows who will be presenting their original research at these meetings.

 

Abstract submissions to the ADA will open October 2, 2017. Registration and Housing will open in early-December, 2017.

 

Please submit your abstracts and the ADA acceptance letter/email when received no later than March 23, 2018 to Eva Gilliam evamarie@uab.edu.
