The radiation therapy program at UAB is one of two nationally accredited degree programs in Alabama. It is one of only 23 accredited programs in the nation at the baccalaureate level.
A radiation therapist has the unique opportunity to blend the knowledge and skills of mathematics, science, and psychology in everyday work. The therapist also has the special opportunity to get to know patients over a period of several months.
Radiation therapists are vital members of a team of health professionals including a radiation oncologist (physician), physicist, dosimetrist, and oncology nurse. Some of the many functions of a radiation therapist include:
- treating patients with malignant diseases using ionizing radiation under the direction of a radiation oncologist;
- operating sophisticated radiation equipment to outline the extent of tumors;
- recognizing treatment complications; and
- providing psychological support to patients and their families.
Graduates of the program have a high pass rate on the national certification exam, are readily employed, and work in hospitals, private radiation oncology centers, research, industry, education, and management.
