It’s been 12 years since I began my career at UAB in the Department of Physical Therapy. I arrived when we first moved into the SHP building on December 2001. Its growth has been tremendous since then. The SHP research programs and collaborations have increased significantly over the last decade.
Researchers in health professions have transitioned from mechanistic studies to more collaborative endeavors that determine how direct interventions can have long term effect on the patient and their community.
In this past year, we have initiated formal collaborations in facilities like the Lakeshore Foundation in Homewood, Ala. In studying persons with physical disability in the community, we will still need mecahanistic studies and the labs to study in. The Human Performance Laboratory will provide us with space and technology to work together to study important research questions related to human movement that we can later apply to the community and longitudinal studies. These labs and this space being added to the 6th floor provide the strong foundation necessary for expanding these research questions into the community.~Matt Ford, Ph.D., Department of Physical Therapy
