Phase ThreeThe final phase is the education culmination of Phase One and Phase Two. We will build an innovative learning center on the 5th floor of our research headquarters in the Susan Mott Webb Nutrition Sciences Building.
When you walk off the elevators you will enter a space like no other. Waterfalls welcome you to an open area with a variety of desks and chairs on wheels to allow people to move, gather and discuss science and ideas. The heart of this area is underneath a lighting system that looks like massive tree leaves.
"The concept mimics the practice of many cultures where people gather around or under a tree to discuss community issues, share their beliefs and solve big challenges," said José Fernández, Ph.D., professor and vice chair for education in the Department of Nutrition Sciences. "We have a vision that this will be a space where community leaders, educators, researchers and students gather to cultivate ideas that will spawn revolutionary discoveries in the fight against obesity and obesity related diseases, including diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease."

Also on the 5th floor of the Webb Building is a state-of-the-art learning center. This space will have the capacity to seat more than 80 students in person and the technology to instantaneously transmit the classroom learning experience globally.
"The auditorium is a very intimate space that is set up in a semi-circle to continue the rounded theme of community that you feel on the entire floor," said Fernández.
The circle theme is symbolic of what we are building. A circle is the inclusion of a group of people with similar interests. A circle represents unity or completeness. A circle is an unbroken line with no end.
And that is how we see ourselves - a unified team that will never stop fighting the obesity epidemic. We ask you to join our team, support our efforts and step into our circle.
*Phase Three is still in design and there is no estimate of cost at this time. We will update the website as soon as an estimate is available.
