College is a time for personal development, academic growth, and self-discovery;
It's the time of your life!
The School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at UAB offers a variety
of divisions so that you may specialize in areas of interest that prepare
you for the future. Even if you plan to continue your study beyond a baccalaureate
degree, majors in biology, chemistry, geology, mathematics, physics, pre-
medicine, pre-dentistry, pre-optometry, and computer and information sciences
provide and ideal foundation for your educational and professional pursuits.
The departments of The School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics are listed
below. Take a few moments to discover your options at UAB.
Department
of Biology
Biology is a multifaceted study of life in its diverse forms. Students
majoring in biology will experience its most exciting era: fresh approaches
and new experimental capabilities are providing new insight into molecular
mechanisms of cells. The UAB biology major provides a Molecular Biology
track to study how DNA technology unravels the way genes program organisms.
Students can also pursue ecological dynamics of marine systems through
the Marine Biology concentration, or tailor preparation for a health- related
profession or another career by selecting courses from such areas as physiology
and development. The Biology Honors Program gives qualified students opportunities
to carry out laboratory and field research activities.

Department
of Chemistry
Chemistry provides us with the means to understand basic physical,
biological and environmental processes. Chemistry faculty are engaged in
laboratory research with upper-level undergraduate and graduate students,
providing insight into direct applications of course work knowledge. The
department's undergraduate programs prepare students for graduate study
in chemistry and related disciplines, professional training in medicine,
dentistry and allied health sciences, and careers dependent upon a broad
background in chemistry.

Department
of Computer and Information Sciences
The computer science program provides fundamental principles of software
and hardware as well as skills in the use of current programming languages,
operating systems and equipment. A telecommunications specialization is
also available within the computer science major to provide opportunities
in the rapidly growing networking area, a networking laboratory has been
established to support this new specialization.

Department
of Mathematics
Mathematics is an elegant and fundamental science, providing structure
and language for the physical sciences and engineering and finding increasing
importance in business, economics and the biological, health and social
sciences. A sound mathematical education equips students with an enhanced
ability for organizing information and solving problems in many areas.
UAB offers a complete range of mathematics courses supporting technical
fields, together with mathematics degree programs at the B.S., M.S. and
Ph.D. levels.
There is also a 5-year Fast Track BS/MS Program affording an early entry
into mathematics research. Scholarships are available.

Department
of Physics
Physics is the most fundamental of the modern sciences, and advances
are made through experimental, computational and theoretical efforts. Knowledge
about physical processes is regularly applied to problems in a range of
fields of science and technology. Physics faculty are engaged in research
with upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in areas including
solid state and material physics, optics and lasers, biophysics, astrophysics
and interdisciplinary areas of space science and materials science and
engineering.

Pre-Medicine, Pre-Dentistry, and Pre-Optometry
UAB offers a variety of undergraduate academic programs designed to
satisfy admission requirements to schools of medicine, dentistry, or optometry.
It also allows the student to pursue individual academic interests. Because
most professional schools want some evidence of clinical experience and
career awareness, you should take advantage of the hospitals located on
the UAB campus and in the surrounding community by working part-time or
volunteering in a clinical setting.
