Aarin Palomares

School of Public Health

Aarin is an MPH Fast-Track student in Health Care Organization and Policy. Her interest in global health includes disparities seen in maternal and child health and infectious disease, particularly in indigenous and migrant populations. She currently serves as a teaching assistant for the Department of Epidemiology, president of the Public Health Student Association, Trip Leader for Timmy Global Health/GHIG and Real Change Fellow for an international non-profit, RESULTS.

Chapelle Ayres

College of Arts and Sciences/School of Public Health

Chapelle is a senior graduating cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Biology this April. She is also in the fast track program at the School of Public Health, earning her Master of Public Health in Epidemiology and will graduate in April of 2017. Chapelle's interests are global health, infectious and tropical diseases, and emergency medicine.

Russ Timothy

School of Public Health

Russ is currently working on an MPH with a concentration in Health Behavior; he is also completing the global health certificate program with UAB's Sparkman Center. As a master's international student, he is set to serve in Peace Corps upon finishing his academic requirements, where he hopes to combat the spread and positively effect the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS in developing nations. With an undergraduate degree in Journalism and a minor in Economics, Russ hopes to find ways to impact others using practical applications of global health economics along with the development of consensus policy guidelines.

Katherine Hymel

School of Public Health

Katherine is a Fast Track MPH Student in Health Behavior and an undergraduate public health student with a global health concentration. Her passion is prevention of chronic diseases in low resource areas with a focus on nutrition interventions for pregnant women. Katherine has worked interantionally with the Caribbean Vulnerable Communities Coalition (CVC), Project Hearts, and 7 Elements.

Kathrin Zimmerman

School of Medicine

Kathrin is a first-year medical student at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. Kathrin grew up in Phoenix, Seattle, and Los Angeles, and completed her undergraduate degree in Peace and Conflict Studies with a focus in Culture and Identity at the University of California, Berkeley. Her grandfather, who is from Ecuador, instilled in her the values of social justice and public service, and is her inspiration for pursuing global health work.

Leonardo Carrubba

School of Public Health

Leonardo earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Mississippi State University. His public health interests include infectious diseases, especially those that exhibit antimicrobial resistances. Leonardo hopes to go to medical school after graduating with his MSPH in applied epidemiology.

Marissa Swanson

College of Arts and Sciences

Marissa is a first year student in the Medical Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program working in the UAB Youth Safety Lab under Dr. David Schwebel. Her research focuses on the development and evaluation of community-based interventions to improve child health and wellness in global contexts. She previously worked for a local NGO in East Africa to improve child education and health.

Mary Orr

School of Public Health

Mary was born and raised in Vestavia Hills, Alabama. She attended undergraduate and graduate school at Tulane University and received a B.S. and M.S. in Neuroscience. She completed medical school at UAB and residency training in pediatrics at Northwestern University, and is currently working in the hospitalist division at Children's of Alabama.

Megan Collins

School of Medicine/School of Public Health

Megan was born and raised in Montgomery, AL and attended Auburn University where she received Bachelor's degrees in biomedical sciences and Spanish. She is currently a 3rd year medical student enrolled in the dual MD/MPH program. Megan is preparing to apply to pediatric residency programs, and plans to incorporate global health into her pediatrics practice throughout her career.

Myrline Gillot

School of Public Health

Myrline is enrolled in the MPH program with a concentration in Epidemiology. She is from Philadelphia, PA and is the third of four children. In the near future, she hopes to become involved in the study and research of risk factors associated with infectious diseases and diseases that cause cognitive impairment, as well as actively participate in creating interventions that will tackle specific and preventable maladies.

Nuzhat Fabiha Majid

School of Public Health

Nuzhat is currently an MPH student in Epidemiology. Her interest lies in working for controlling infectious and sexually transmitted diseases globally. She is passionate to work in global epidemiology after she completes her degree.

Reshmi Mukerji

School of Public Health

Reshmi is an MPH student in the Health Care Organization and Policy Department. She desires to improve the quality of life of the most impoverished people and communities around the world by improving their access to health care.

Seth Borgstede

School of Public Health

Seth is an undergraduate student pursuing his B.S. in public health concentrating in global health. He was selected as a Clinton Global Initiative University Scholar for his project working to combat diarrheal disease in children in sub-Saharan Africa and currently works with Dr. Henna Budhwani researching maternal and neonatal health outcomes relating to sepsis. Seth also works for the nonprofit NGO, Sozo Children, that works to care for orphaned and neglected children in Uganda.
