Student Experience

In celebration of Black History Month, the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Division of Student Affairs held its first Black History Month Program on Thursday, February 24, in the Hill Student Center Ballrooms. The event was sponsored by the UAB Office of Veteran Services, Off-Campus Student and Family Engagement and the Black Student Awareness Committee (BSAC).

The program focused on the contributions of Black Americans and celebrated Black History. BSAC members highlighted significant people and places relating to Black history in Alabama throughout the program. The Student and Staff Ensemble also performed musical selections, Lift Every Voice and Sing and Reflections.

“Celebrating Black History is celebrating American history,” said Walter C. Stewart III, Veteran Services director. “If I cut my hand and you cut your hand, the blood is still going to be the same color red. We are human, and we must act accordingly and treat each other as humans.”
