Student Experience

The Student Affairs Dessert Bake-Off Competition presented by the Professional Development Committee was a huge success. The winner of the competition was Brandon Brown of Student Housing and Residence Life who made TwoMama’s Skillet Apple Pie. Brandon also won the People’s Choice Award.

When asked about his inspiration for the pie, Brandon said, “My inspiration for baking the Skillet Apple Pie comes from my grandmother and mother. Both my mother and grandmother (Twomama) are esteemed bakers and can make/bake just about anything, however the skillet apple pie has just stuck with me over these past years. When I felt that I had mastered the recipe, I now have to keep the legacy going of my grandmother, who recently passed. Every time I bake one of the Skillet Apple Pies, I think of her and all of her cooking talents and techniques. What makes the pie even better is adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream – this takes it over the top!“

There were six delicious baked treats that were judged on presentation, originality, creativity, flavor and overall impression. The competition was tough and the scores were very close. Below is a list of all of the participants and their desserts:

  • Brandon Brown – TwoMama’s Skillet Apple Pie
  • Jennifer Griffin – Brown Butter Nutella-stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookies with Sea Salt
  • Michelle December – Strawberry Lemonade Icebox Pie
  • Valerie Dubose – Lemon Squares
  • Mandy Parente – Mint Julep Cupcakes (Inspired by the Kentucky Derby)
  • Hannah Doss – Blazing Peach Cobbler

Special thanks to the judges and the Hill Student Center!
