It's time to play 'Name That Bus'
Enrollment at UAB continues to climb, and parking spaces can't hope to keep up. We all understand that finding a space and getting to class on time can be a challenge.
And with new construction projects—particularly the demolition of Hill University Center, which will shuffle its internal offices and services to different parts of campus—moving your car around campus isn't getting any easier.
That's why UAB Parking & Transportation is bringing a fleet of 12 buses to campus that will shuttle UAB students, faculty, and staff for free along three different routes.
The new fleet of buses comes from a partnership with First Transit, the nation's leading bus transportation provider, and will replace the current Campus Ride/Escort systems. The buses will seat 30-35 passengers with room for an additional 12-15 people standing—more than six times greater than the maximum capacity of the current system.
Bus drop-off and pick-up points are planned such that riders can expect no more than a five-minute walk from any stop. Although wait times during peak hours are expected to be no more than 8-12 minutes, the buses will also be equipped with GPS transponders so that you can plan your wait to the minute using a mobile app.
One key element that is yet to be determined is a name for UAB's new bus system. And that's where you come in. Visit uab.edu/namethebus (sorry, contest has ended) to suggest a name, and if yours is chosen, you'll win an iPad Mini (which you can use while you ride the new bus). Name submissions are due by May 21.
