Take an early look at UAB's new student center

UAB got its first glimpse at what our new student center will look like as the Board of Trustees approved plans for the building during their June meeting. The design appears more along the lines of the Campus Rec Center than the current Hill University Center, with a flowing form and greater emphasis on glass than brick.

When completed, the student center will feature more than 150,000 square feet of space, focused on student services and activities. Familiar student destinations such as the UAB Bookstore, One Stop Student Services, Student Media, and Student Involvement -- which are relocating during the building transition -- will return, while other offices with a more administrative focus will find permanent homes elsewhere on campus.

The idea is to make UAB's student center truly a student center.

All offices in Hill University Center are scheduled to be vacated by the end of June, with demolition of the HUC beginning in August. Construction of the new building will continue for approximately two years and is targeted for completion by the Fall 2015 semester.
