Summer Research Expo to feature talk on marine turtle conservation

UAB Research ExpoUAB's Summer Research Expo will be held Thursday, July 24, 2014 from 8-10:30 a.m. at the Campus Rec Center. The event showcases research produced by UAB undergraduates and students in UAB summer research programs.

Thane Wibbels, PhD, professor of reproductive biology will be the Expo's guest speaker with a lecture on marine turtle conservation.

Dr. Wibbels has been studying marine turtles since 1980 and has said that, in particular, the world's largest marine turtle, the 2000-pound leatherback sea turtle, could be gone within the next 20 years. â€śThe leatherback is one of the most intriguing animals in nature, and we are watching it head towards extinction in front of our eyes,” he said in an interview with UAB News.

Dr. Thane WibbelsDr. Wibbels' talk will take place from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. in Heritage Hall, room 102 (just across the Campus Green from the Rec Center). The lecture will be immediately followed by the awards ceremony for student posters from the Summer Research Expo.

Note: Students participating in the Expo must submit their abstracts to the Office of Undergraduate Research by July 16, 2014 at noon.
