  • Fall 2018/Spring 2019 Meal Plan Information


    Fall and Spring meal plans are a combination of Meal Swipes and Dining Dollars.

    Meal Swipes are accessed via your ONE Card and can be used at the Commons on The Green for all-you-care-to-eat meals. Individuals with Dragonfire plans have unlimited daily meal plan access (either 7 or 5 days per week depending on the plan chosen) and individuals with all other plans can use up to five meals per day. Meal Swipes can also be used at any Simply to Go location through the "Take 3" program at the Commons on The Green and the C-Store in Camp Hall. For all plans, individuals may use one meal exchange at Simply to Go locations per meal period (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and Late Night).

    NEW! Individuals with Dragonfire plans are eligible to upgrade to MVP status for an additional $140 per semester. MVP allows one meal swipe per day to be used at select UAB dining locations (WOW Café, Zime, Sandella’s Flatbread Café, and Jamba Juice) for a value of up to $7.00. Any remaining balance can be paid with Dining Dollars, Dragon Cash, BlazerBucks, cash, or credit.

    Meals on the Green & Gold plan will reset each week on Sunday night.

    Meals are exclusive to the meal plan holder aside from designated Guest Passes:

    • Dragonfire and Gold Block Plans: You may use up to 15 meals per semester for your dining guests.
    • Green & Gold Plan: You may use up to one of your meals each week for your dining guests.
    Dining Dollars may be used for guests at any time in any UAB Campus Dining destination.

    Dining Dollars is a declining balance account that can be used for purchases at all UAB dining destinations. At the conclusion of each semester, any unused funds in Dining Dollars will be removed from the individual's meal plan account the day after the last day of final exams.

    Campus Dining Fee funds can be accessed through the students Dragon Cash account. Dragon Cash is a declining balance account that can be used for purchases at all UAB dining destinations.

    Enrolled students not assessed the Campus Dining Fee may elect to add $225 to their Dragon Cash account during fall and spring semesters by sending an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

    Full-time non-residential students taking six hours or less on campus during a given semester may be exempt from the Campus Dining Fee during that semester. Courses offered online (excluding “blended” courses) or at a location more than 100 miles away from UAB’s campus are considered off-campus when determining eligibility for a waiver.

    Funds in the student’s Dragon Cash account will roll over during the terms included in one academic year (i.e. fall to spring to summer). After the last class day of summer semester, 25% of any remaining balance in a student’s Dragon Cash account will be converted to BlazerBucks before the Dragon Cash account is cleared out in preparation for the upcoming academic year.

    The Dragon Cash account is used for accessing Campus Dining Fee funds only. Individuals who wish to add additional funds can do so through their BlazerBucks account.

All other enrolled students living on campus will be required by the University to purchase a meal plan and can select from Dragonfire, Green & Gold, Gold Block, or Dining Dollars plans.

    *Freshmen are defined as first-year students who reside on campus and meet the following criteria:

    • Graduated high school within the last 4 academic years
    • Entered UAB with less than 12 credit hours taken at another university after high school graduation
    • Have not attended UAB during a previous academic year, excluding the summer term immediately preceding the academic year in question

    Enrolled students not residing on campus and University employees may elect to purchase any meal plan during the fall and spring semesters.


    Meal Plans – Summer Semester

    Summer meal plans are available to UAB students enrolled in summer classes. Summer meal plan participation is optional for all students, including students living on campus during the summer terms.

  • Important Notes


    • Enrolled students not residing on campus may elect to purchase any one of the meal plans during fall and spring semesters.
    • Students may select a primary and a secondary meal plan.
    • Fall 2018 meal plans will be available for use Wednesday, August 22, 2018.
    • The last day to use Fall 2018 meals plans is the last day of finals, Friday, December 14, 2018.
    • Spring 2019 meal plans will be available for use Saturday, January 5, 2019.
    • The last day to use Spring 2019 meal plans is the last day of finals. Friday, April 26, 2019
    • Students with Green & Gold or Gold Block plans can use up to five (5) meals per day. Dragonfire plan holders can use up to one (1) meal swipe per fifteen (15) minute period.
    • Meals are exclusive for the meal plan holder. All meal plans include fifteen (15) meals eligible for use on guests (Guest Meal Passes). These meals are already built in to the plan.
    • Dining Dollars can be used to pay for guests at any of our campus dining destinations.
    • Dragon Cash rolls over each semester and is available for use until the end of summer final exams, Friday, August 9, 2019. On Saturday, August 10, 2019, remaining Dragon Cash will be converted: 25% to BlazerBucks, 75% cleared out.
  • Guest Meal Passes


    What are Guest Meal Passes?

    Guest Meal Passes were added to the Meal Plan to allow students a set number of meals to be used on friends and family. You may use a Guest Meal to treat friends or family to an all-you-care-to-eat meal at The Commons on the Green. You must accompany your guest while dining at The Commons.

    15 guest meal passes per semester

    Students who have Dragonfire, Green & Gold, and Gold Block plans will have 15 guest meal passes per semester. Dragonfire and Gold Block plan guest meals can be used at any time throughout the semester. Green & Gold allows one guest meal plass per week.

    How do I use a Guest Meal Pass?

    To use a Guest Meal Pass just swipe your card at The Commons for your meal and tell the cashier you are using a Guest Meal Pass for your guests dining with you.

    Can I check my Guest Meal Balance?

    Your Guest Meal Pass balance will be displayed on the "Manage My Account" section of the ONE Card website. You can check all your account balances online at www.uab.edu/campuscard.

    What happens to my Guest Meal Passes if I don't use them for guests?

    If you do not use your guest meals for guests, you can use them for yourself each week.

    After charges are posted to the student account, payments for meal plans and the Campus Dining Fee can be made to the Student Accounting Office in person, by mail and online.

    To pay in person, visit the Cashier's Office in LHL 110.
    To pay by mail, send a check for your meal plan payment to:

    How can a student or employee select a meal plan?

    Select your meal plan at www.uab.edu/onecard under the “Manage My Account” section. Students who are required to purchase a meal plan who do not make a selection by the published deadline will be assigned the minimum required meal plan.

    Where can I use my Meal Plan?

    How can a student or employee pay for a meal plan? Campus Dining Fee? BlazerBucks?

    Student payments for meal plans and the Campus Dining Fee can be made to the Student Accounting Office in person in the Lister Hill Library Ground Floor 110, by mail to UAB Student Accounting Services, LHL Ground Floor 110, 1720 2nd Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35294-0013, and online through BlazerNET.

    Employees will be required to submit payment by credit/debit card when they select their meal plan to complete the ordering process. Employees who prefer to pay by check can come to the Student Services office in SIH 220 to sign up and pay.

    Deposits into BlazerBucks can be made by check in person or by mail to UAB Student Services; 920 16th Street South, Blazer Hall Room 131, Birmingham, AL 35294-1113. Deposits can also be made through a BlazerBucks Value Transfer Station, located in One Stop Student Services and Sterne and Lister Hill Libraries via credit/debit card or cash, and pre-registered and enrolled students and UAB employees can make deposits online at www.uab.edu/onecard via credit/debit card.

    University employees may also sign up for BlazerBucks payroll deduction online.

    Can a student or employee select more than one meal plan?

    Which funds roll over from semester to semester? From year to year?

    Funds in the student’s Dragon Cash account will roll over during the terms included in one academic year (i.e. fall to spring to summer). After the last class day of summer semester, 25% of any remaining balance in a student’s Dragon Cash account will be converted to BlazerBucks before the Dining Dollars account is cleared out in preparation for the upcoming academic year. Balances in BlazerBucks carry-over from year to year until the cardholder graduates or otherwise permanently leaves the university. Meals and Dining Dollars (part of the meal plan) do not roll over at the end of the semester.

    How do I know which account to use?

    If you are eating at the Commons you should use a Meal Swipe, however can also use any other form of payment to dine at the Commons. If you are dining at any other location you can use Dining Dollars, Dragon Cash, or BlazerBucks. The register will deduct money from the account that expires first: Dining Dollars, then Dragon Cash, then BlazerBucks.

    How do I check my Meal Plan or Dining Dollar Balance?

    Go to uab.edu/onecard and click “Manage My Account” - login using your Blazer ID and secure password

    Can I use another student's ONE Card to purchase meals?

    No. You may not use another student’s ONE Card to purchase a meal. Meals are Meal Plan holder exclusive and cannot be used to purchase Meals for other guest. You may use Dining Dollars or Dragon Cash to purchase food for any guests. Any ONE Card that is used by another student other than the owner will be confiscated and turned into the ONE Card Office.

    Can a student request exemption from meal plan participation?

    Campus resident students with dietary restrictions due to a disability or medical condition or with dietary restrictions based on religious practices may apply for exemption from mandatory meal plan participation. In order to qualify for an exemption, students must submit a Meal Plan Exemption Request Form and all required documentation to the Director for Academic and Student Service Operations no later than the last day to drop/add.

    Exemption Request Forms can be picked up or requested by email from the following departments:

    • no longer meets mandatory meal plan requirements, or
    • withdraws from the University.

    After the last day to drop/add, refunds of unused meal plan balances will be allowed only for students who are approved for withdrawal by the UAB Office of Enrollment Management (e.g. military leave, medical withdrawal, etc.) Refunds based on approval by the Office of Enrollment Management must be requested within one year of the student’s withdrawal from the University; after that time, unused meal plan balances become non-refundable.

    Refunds of any unused Dragon Cash balance from the current semester will be available until the last day to drop/add if a student:

    • no longer meets mandatory Dining Fee requirements, or
    • withdraws from the University.

    After the last day to drop/add, refunds of unused Dragon Cash balances from that semester will be allowed only for students who are approved for withdrawal by the UAB Office of Enrollment Management (e.g. military leave, medical withdrawal, etc.)

    Refunds based on approval by the Office of Enrollment Management must be requested within one year of the student’s withdrawal from the University; after that time, unused Dining Dollars balances become non-refundable. Refund requests for unused BlazerBucks funds are accepted only after the cardholder leaves the University. Refund requests must be made within twelve months of the cardholder’s withdrawal from the University.

    How does a cardholder request a refund?

    Approved Meal plan and Dragon Cash refunds are processed automatically by credit to the individual’s student account. BlazerBucks refunds are processed only by request of the cardholder and can be submitted online at uab.edu/onecard under the “Manage My Account” section.

    At what point are funds in an inactive account forfeited?

    Balances in UAB ONE Card accounts which remain inactive for a twelve (12) month consecutive period, and for which no request for refund has been received will be forfeited.
