The Mission Statement of Curriculum 2000 and the Core Clinical Competencies document describe the mission of the University of Alabama School of Medicine as producing quality physicians who have knowledge, skills, professionalism, and the habit of life-long learning. Certainly, the clinical courses should provide opportunities for learning and/or further developing these qualities. Believing that the fourth year is a time when students can and should round out their undergraduate medical education and that many students could select their selectives and electives more wisely, the fourth year is being changed (effective with those students beginning their Senior year in 1998). The change adds 4 weeks (increasing from 12 to 16 weeks) of required courses, with 12 weeks being considered Inpatient and 4 weeks Ambulatory (see New Senior Year Requirements). In the past, students have used their elective courses to audition for their choice of residency rather than enrich and broaden their medical education experiences. Therefore, academic advisors are strongly urged to identify and recommend to each advisee courses that will contribute a great deal to the student’s preparation for residency in the clinical area of interest. You have agreed to serve as either the only advisor or one of a few academic advisors of students who are interested in a residency in your discipline. Each student whom you are advising will be required to obtain your advice and signed approval before he/she will be eligible to register for any fourth-year course (requirement or elective).
