Recognized, both nationally and internationally, for the patient care, educational and research activities provided by the faculty members at the Medical Center. University Hospital – A regional 904-bed medical center organized primarily for the provision of tertiary care. During the last fiscal year, there were 42,825 in-patient admissions and almost one-half million outpatient visits. The Hospital offers several specialty hospitals which include: Alabama Heart Hospital for the medical and surgical treatment of patients with cardiovascular diseases; Lurleen B. Wallace Complex for the treatment of patients with cancer; Spain Rehabilitation Center for the treatment of patients with spinal cord injuries; Diabetes Hospital for the treatment of patients with diabetes and metabolic diseases; West Pavilion neurological inpatient beds, orthopaedic inpatient beds; and a special care unit; The Center for Psychiatric Medicine for treatment of patients with mental disorders. Other hospitals in the Medical Center Complex: Cooper Green Hospital – a 319-bed facility providing acute care for the indigent population of Jefferson County, Alabama. The Children’s Hospital of Alabama – 225-bed regional acute care medical center for children. Veteran’s Administration Hospital – A 255 active bed medical facility for the treatment of veterans. Eye Foundation Hospital
– Licensed for 106 beds for the treatment of patients with diseases of
the eye.
University of Alabama School of Medicine – Montgomery, Alabama Montgomery is a regional medical center for the seventeen county Alabama health services area, receiving patients from a population of approximately 676,800 with approximately 3,200 clinical beds within the region, and a highly sophisticated medical care system. Montgomery County’s medical care system alone accounts for approximately 1,285 clinical beds and an extensive continuing medical education program.Accredited Residency Programs: Private Hospitals with Accredited Residences: Carraway Methodist Medical Center – Birmingham, Alabama Licensed for 617-beds and is a Level 1 Trauma Center. This institution developed the first aeromedical transport service in Alabama and continues to actively provide this service. Carraway has a strong orientation toward critical care but continues to provide primary medical care. As an educational site, Carraway offers a very strong academic program and extensive patient care experience. Carraway has a long-standing commitment to medical student and physician education.Accredited Residency Programs: Baptist Medical Centers – Birmingham, Alabama The Baptist Medical Centers were founded in 1922 and today is Alabama’s largest not-for-profit health care system. BMC has some 40,000 inpatient admissions annually and generates more than $400 million in revenue. The system’s two flagship tertiary medical centers, Montclair and Princeton, offer a complete range of services, from open heart surgery to mobile lithotripsy services to clinical training for 80 residents. BMC’s diversity of services makes it one of the most active health care organizations in the Southeast, and renowned for providing compassionate health care of the highest quality. Baptist Medical Center (BMC), includes Baptist Montclair and Baptist Princeton Hospitals located within a few miles of the Medical Center, is a health care complex which also includes an ambulatory surgery and laser center, professional office buildings, a renal dialysis center, an animal research lab, a rehabilitation unit, a psychiatric unit, a mitral valve prolapse center, and two high-rise apartment buildings for senior citizens.Accredited Residency Programs: Medical Center East Hospital – Birmingham, Alabama A 282 bed modern facility, having opened in 1985 in Roebuck, in the eastern part of the City of Birmingham. The hospital is an acute general short-term care hospital, with over 300 physicians in 49 specialties, including open-heart surgery.Accredited Residency Programs: Hospitals without Residencies Lloyd Noland Hospital – Located in Fairfield, Alabama, a western suburb of the City of Birmingham. With 222 beds, the hospital serves the area as an acute general short-term care hospital. As a community group practice hospital, Lloyd Noland has more than 100 physicians in 24 specialties. St. Vincent’s Hospital – a 338-bed private, not-for-profit hospital conveniently located on Birmingham’s Southside. Established in 1898, St. Vincent’s is Birmingham’s oldest hospital. St. Vincent’s is a fully accredited facility with all branches of medicine represented by more than 250 physicians on its active and associate staff and over 600 on the total medical staff. HealthSouth Medical Center – a 219-bed acute care facility on Birmingham’s Southside only a few blocks from the University of Alabama Medical Center. Located at HealthSouth Medical Center is Alabama Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center, which routinely treats renowned sports figures and other dignitaries from around the world. In addition to sports medicine and orthopaedics, HealthSouth Medical Center also excels in the fields of gastroenterology, pulmonary medicine, ophthalmology, internal medicine, family practice, otolaryngology, neurosurgery, neurology, physical rehabilitation and other clinical areas. Shelby Medical Center – A 210-bed regional health care center located in Alabaster, Alabama, approximately 20 miles from the City of Birmingham. Shelby Memorial Center, a non-profit organization, is equipped with extremely modern medical technology and staffed by more than 100 active and consulting physicians. Brookwood Medical Center
– A 586-bed growing medical center located 3 miles from downtown Birmingham,
Alabama in the city of Homewood. Brookwood Medical Center is a for-profit
acute general care hospital offering the most up-to-date medical technology
available, including an operating room for eyes only, and a separate Women’s
Hospital. Brookwood Medical Center is staffed by 815 physicians,
including more than 300 who are active.
