Center for Advanced Surgical Aesthetics

Director:  Jorge de la Torre, MD

Established:  2001

Mission and Demographics

The purpose of the Center for Advanced Surgical Aesthetics it to serve as a multidisciplinary center of excellence in the field of aesthetic surgery.  This multidisciplinary, comprehensive approach to plastic surgery unites an integrated group of UAB physicians committed to critically evaluating new technologies and applications for aesthetic and reconstructive surgery, while providing a full range of services to an expanding patient base.  The Center currently has seven appointed faculty representing two departments within the School of Medicine.

Center Services

The Center for Advanced Surgical Aesthetics allows for the sharing of facilities and clinical expertise.  It provides care for patients in an out-patient setting and allows for the development of new techniques and technology for aesthetic surgery.  Patients are seen at The Kirklin Clinic or at the Acton Road facility.  Directed patient information using lectures, symposia, and the internet heightens awareness of the services offered for both clinicians and patients.

Center Research

As the population continues to age, aesthetic surgery will be performed at a growing rate.  In order to improve outcomes and safety, it is necessary to develop standardized evaluation of patients.  By creating a multidisciplinary aesthetic surgery center, critical assessment of current and emerging technologies is possible.  New techniques and applications have been developed to improve patient care in an area that will continue to grow and evolve at a rapid rate.

The Center works directly with bioengineering to develop and use state-of-the-art quantitative assessment techniques.  With the establishment of the Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery, the Center for Advanced Surgical Aesthetics is working to develop new technologies to apply specifically to aesthetic surgery and more broadly to plastic surgery.  This development will aid in objectively evaluating patients who are undergoing aesthetic surgery in addition to monitoring and decreasing the complication rate.

Training and Education

A key element of the Center for Advanced Surgical Aesthetics is to provide critical analysis of patient outcomes and to educate clinical practitioners.  With the Division of Plastic Surgery, the Center also participates in training four residents and two fellows.  In the spring of 2003, the Center offered a UAB Honors Program entitled “The Biology of Beauty and The Role of Aesthetics in Health.”  In addition, a post-graduate clinical course is in development for spring 2004.
