Center for the Study of Ethics and Values in the Sciences

Director:  Harold Kincaid, PhD

Established:  1998

Mission and Demographics

The Center for the Study of Ethics and Values in the Sciences was created to promote research, education, and public discussion of ethical issues in science.  Housed in the Department of Philosophy and the School of Arts and Humanities, the Center is partially funded by the Cystic Fibrosis Research Center.  The Center currently has six appointed faculty representing three departments and three schools at UAB.

Center Activities

The Center hosts a yearly international conference, at which experts from a variety of fields make presentations on important ethical issues in science.  The Center has held a series of high profile national conferences, including "Ethical Issues in Clinical Trials," "Value Free Science: Ideal or Illusion," and "Training in the Responsible Conduct of Research" with the co-sponsorship of the NSF and Office of Research Integrity (ORI) in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  It has recently produced a video entitled “In the Lab” on issues in mentoring and authorship funded by the ORI and is currently producing a video on ethical issues in minority health research.

The Center offers GRD 717, “Principles of Scientific Integrity,” for graduate students as well as an ethics component in UAB’s NIH-sponsored K30 Clinical Research Training Program.
