Mission
The Mission of the Center for Joint Replacement
is to combine state-of-the-art surgery for the hip and knee with improvements
in patient education and patient satisfaction.
The Center is comprised of a multidisciplinary team of medical
professionals who are specially trained in joint replacement and who care only
for joint replacement patients.
Facility Description and Activities
Associated with the Department of
Surgery, the Center’s clinical activity is located in UAB Highlands
Hospital. Pre-op training and an emphasis on group
activities such as physical therapy raises patient satisfaction and speeds
recovery. The Center for Joint
Replacement includes the following:
- orthopaedic surgeons who specialize in joint
replacements;
- nursing
coordinators who oversee all aspects of care including pre-operative
planning, in-hospital care and coordination of discharge needs;
- rehabilitation
programs managed by physical and occupational therapists specifically
designed to return Total Joint patients to their activities of daily
living;
- pre-op
education including a patient education manual; and
- participation
by family and friends who serve as "coaches" during
postoperative and recovery phases.
