The UASOM - University of Zurich Exchange Program
|
|
Radiology Radiology at the University of Zurich is quite different from that of UAB. The radiologist seems to be much more integrated into patient management, with all films (even portable chest films) going directly to the radiologist for immediate intepretation; few films are lost that way, and it ensures a proper and timely interpretation. Technologically, the hospital has all the essential diagnostic services, including GI/GU, musculoskeletal, chest, CT, ultrasound, ER, MRI, interventional radiology, and mammography. The residency training program is extremely hands-on. After an introductory period, residents are essentially on their own, with attendings assisting only if called upon. One thus spends almost all of one's time with residents. As a student, the day begins with a 7:40 - 8:15 didactic session conducted in Swiss German. The rest of the day is spent with one the radiology services, observing procedures and film interpretations. One is scheduled to rotate through all of the major services; however, the rotation is flexible enough to allow one to visit any service one wants. Every other week, the department holds a lunchtime journal club, with journals in English and discussion in Swiss German. The department also holds weekly conferences for students, also conducted in Swiss German. It is highly recommended that one have at least a basic understanding of Swiss German in order to make the experience worthwhile. All of the residents and attendings are eager to practice their English; however, they are very busy and have little time to explain their interpretations. Just as in the radiology rotation at UAB, in order to get the most out of a film interpretation, one needs to listen to the residents as they dictate. One does not need to bring a radiology text to Zurich. The department has a library filled with English texts, including the highly-recommended Squire's Fundamentals of Radiology. |
