Founded in 1983, the University Honors Program was the first honors program at UAB. Our nationally acclaimed interdisciplinary arts and sciences curriculum (33 credit hours) replaces a student's core curriculum (41 credit hours), the only exception to the core curriculum in the state of Alabama. See the Curriculum page for more details.
Since all incoming students are required to complete the core regardless of their major, the University Honors Program is open to all majors. Unlike many honors programs whose requirements are added to core and major requirements, our curriculum replaces the core curriculum and so participation in our honors program in no way delays progress towards your degree.
An engaging learning environment and interdisciplinary approach leads our students to excel in their disciplines. In the last few years UHP seniors have received the Outstanding Undergraduate Award in the departments of biology, biomedical engineering, chemistry, economics, English, foreign languages and literatures, international studies, history, mathematics, political science, psychology, and theatre. Our students have been incredibly successful in winning local and national awards. For more information, please view our Achievements page.
