Definitions

50 Percent of Account Balance
Half of a student’s total charges, minus applicable aid that remains on a student’s account as a balance.

Account Balance
This is the amount displayed on the student account within BlazerNET that is due on the early payment deadline, the final payment deadline and/or the deferred payment deadline.

Add/Drop Period
The period during which students can make changes to their schedules immediately prior to registration ending for the term.

Applicable Charges
The basis on which the account balance is calculated. It includes tuition, fees, housing and dining charges, as well as any outstanding and/or otherwise applicable charges.

Deferment
A fee charged to students who register during the add/drop period and fail to make their initial payment of 50 percent of their account balance.

Deferment Fee

The $50 fee charged to students who register during the add/drop period and fail to make their initial payment of 50 percent of their account balance.

Distribution

The process by which awarded financial aid is credited to a student account.

Dropped from Classes
If a student does not meet the initial 50 percent payment deadline, all courses are removed from the student’s schedule, and registration for the term is cancelled.

Federal Work-Study (also Work-Study)
Self-help awarded to and accepted by the student as part of the financial aid process; it must be earned through hourly employment in a position approved for funding.

First Class Day
This is the first day that classes officially meet for the term.

Grant
Financial aid that is awarded to a student that does not have to be repaid based on demonstrated financial need or other factors.

Late Registrant
A student who does not initially register for any courses for a specific term until after the initial payment deadline.  

Loan
Self-help awarded to and accepted by the student as part of the financial aid process; it must be repaid.

Packaging
The process used by financial aid to construct a financial aid award based on costs incurred by a student.

Stipend
A periodic payment to the student based on a contractual arrangement between the student and another entity.

Student
An undergraduate or graduate student at UAB. This payment plan does not include first professional programs in Medicine, Dentistry or Optometry.
