Commission on the Status of Women

From the Chair

wendygunthercanadaThe University of Alabama at Birmingham’s vital commitment to equity and diversity is demonstrated by the educational achievements of women students, innovative scholarship of women faculty, and professional advancement of women staff and administrators.  The Commission on the Status of Women is dedicated to enhancing the options for women at every stage of their education and careers.  Policy initiatives aimed at work-life balance or training emerging leaders improve the academic climate and benefit the entire campus community.  The Commission’s outreach efforts impact the lives of women and their families in Birmingham and beyond.

Members of the Commission on the Status of Women work together on Standing Committees focused on Campus Climate; Communication and Outreach; Membership; and Representation and Compensation.  We have collaborated with other representative organizations on campus to open new doors of opportunity for women and to build a network of support and service necessary for a positive educational environment and workplace.

I welcome you to share your thoughts and concerns with me or your representative on the Commission.  There are plenty of Commission sponsored activities just waiting for your participation including our Brown Bag Seminar Series, Commission Town Hall forums, and special events highlighting the outstanding women at UAB.  Reach out to your representative on the Commission and refer to the Commission calendar on our webpages for events of interest to you.  We hope to hear from you soon!
