Frank Setzer

About Franklin Setzer

The Community Information System owes a great debt to the late Franklin Setzer.  He was present at the inception of the idea.  An asset driven planner with a commitment to low-income communities, Frank knew the need for a fine-grained and multi-layered description of struggling communities. Due, in large part, to his excitement at the possibilities of such a system and his confidence that it could be realized, the Woodlawn Housing Initiative is fortunate to have the use of this system today.

Frank was a teacher, architect and planner with a distinguished academic and professional career.  He was also a practical visionary.  He founded and directed the Auburn University Center for Architecture and Urban Studies and its Small Town Design InitiativeHis restless spirit pushed him beyond the university.  Setzer was a founding member of Your Town Alabama, The Tuesday Group, Inc., and Birmingham Affordable Rental Communities (BARC) on whose Boards he served.  He also served as a commissioner of the Housing Authority of the Birmingham District.

He died at 52, on May 23, 2001, a year before the completion of this project but not before he made an indelible mark on it and on everyone
