About Franklin Setzer The Community Information System owes a great debt to the late Franklin Setzer. He was present at the inception of the idea. An asset driven planner with a commitment to low-income communities, Frank knew the need for a fine-grained and multi-layered description of struggling communities. Due, in large part, to his excitement at the possibilities of such a system and his confidence that it could be realized, the Woodlawn Housing Initiative is fortunate to have the use of this system today. Frank was a teacher, architect and planner with a distinguished academic and professional career. He was also a practical visionary. He founded and directed the Auburn University Center for Architecture and Urban Studies and its Small Town Design Initiative. His restless spirit pushed him beyond the university. Setzer was a founding member of Your Town Alabama, The Tuesday Group, Inc., and Birmingham Affordable Rental Communities (BARC) on whose Boards he served. He also served as a commissioner of the Housing Authority of the Birmingham District. He died at 52, on May 23, 2001, a year before the completion of this project but not before he made an indelible mark on it and on everyone
