Prior to joining UAB, Prof. Powell taught at Mississippi State University and the University of Central Florida. He also spent one-year teaching in Japan (Meisei University) and has taught two semesters in Bangkok, Thailand. He also spent eleven years as a full-time political consultant.

Prof. Powell also has an extensive background in professional sports media, having served as a free-lance contributor to a number of sports and music publications. He also spent several years as the UAB correspondent for Rivals.com. His research interests focus mainly on political communication, sports communication, and popular culture topics.

Prof. Powell has been ranked as one of the top 50 communication researchers in the nation. He is the author or co-author of more than 20 books and more than 80 research articles.
