The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) will host the University’s second celebration of Community Month with a series of events and activities that showcase the dynamic presence of diversity at UAB. The month-long series will open on January 16th.

Throughout January, a variety of activities are planned to engage students, faculty, staff and the wider community in diversity programs that include lectures, cultural programs, and games organized by various academic and support units across the campus. Many of these events allow departments and organizations to showcase their diversity efforts through presentations, lectures, and performances. Others will allow participants to take part in critical dialogues and collaborate with local community partners.

In addition to Community Month, UAB, the City of Birmingham and various community partners have joined together to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a series of events on campus and throughout the city of Birmingham, Alabama. The theme of this year’s celebration serves as a call for community in divisive times: “Now Is The Time To Do What’s Right”. The weeklong celebration begins on Sunday, January 14th at 5:00 PM with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute Concert featuring the Blind Boys of Alabama and the combined choirs of Alabama A&M University, Alabama State University, Miles College, Talladega College, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, with Dr. Henry Panion, III serving as conductor at the UAB Alys Stephens Center’s Jemison Concert Hall. The concert is presented by the City of Birmingham in association with the Alabama Bicentennial Commission and the UAB College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Music.
