In partnership with Alabama ADVANCE, the UAB Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion hosts virtual seminars to discuss the advancement of women in academic STEM. The monthly seminars feature various speakers from UAB and surrounding ADVANCE institutions to discuss recruitment and retention of women and minorities, tenure in STEM fields, the balance of work and family, and many others.

Alabama ADVANCE Spring Symposium

Co-sponsored by The University of Alabama at Birmingham and The University of Alabama in Huntsville and hosted by the Alabama ADVANCE Partnership for Achieving Gender Equity in STEM (APAGES), Alabama A&M University, Miles College and Oakwood University on April 14, 2022, as part of the APAGES ongoing programming activities.

The Symposium featured speakers Jessie DeAro, Ph.D., the ADVANCE Program Director from the National Science Foundation, and Devon W. Carbado, J.D., the Honorable Harry Pregerson, Professor of Law from UCLA.

Alabama ADVANCE: The Relevance of HBCUs in STEM Education

Co-sponsored by the University of Alabama in Huntsville and hosted by the Alabama ADVANCE Partnership for Achieving Gender Equity in STEM (APAGES), the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Alabama A&M University, Miles College, Oakwood University, and Auburn University on March 9, 2022, as part of the APAGES ongoing programming activities.

The Alabama ADVANCE Seminar featured Ansley Abraham, Ph.D. from the Southern Regional Education Board, and Marcia Owens, J.D., Ph.D., from Florida A & M University, who discussed: The Relevance of HBCUs in STEM Education.

The speakers shared that for more than 100 years, HBCUs have been educating minorities, providing them with economic opportunities, and instilling great values. Not only have they consistently produced leaders in their communities and across the nation, but HBCUs today are relevant, consistently, and affordably producing the leaders of the future, including educating minorities in STEM education.

Alabama ADVANCE: Culture and Climate of Academic departments and STEM Organizations

Co-sponsored by the University of Alabama in Huntsville and hosted by the Alabama ADVANCE Partnership for Achieving Gender Equity in STEM (APAGES), the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Alabama A&M University, Miles College, Oakwood University, and Auburn University on February 15, 2022 as part of the APAGES ongoing programming activities.

The Alabama ADVANCE Seminar featured Kecia Thomas, Ph.D., from The University of Alabama at Birmingham, and Annice Yarber-Allen, Ph.D., from Columbus State University. The speakers discussed: Culture and Climate of Academic Departments and STEM Organizations, addressing various aspects of the culture and climate of academic STEM departments and STEM organizations that differentially affect women and minorities and serve as barriers to their career advancement and future success.

ADVANCE Seminar Series: Best Practices for Recruitment and Retention of Women and Minorities

In partnership with Alabama ADVANCE, the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will host virtual seminars to discuss the advancement of women in academic STEM. The topics for the seminars will cover the recruitment and retention of women and minorities, tenure in STEM fields, the balance of work and family, and many others.

The seminar series began on October 20, 2020, featuring the speakers Dr. Kecia Thomas, UAB, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Dr. Verna Keith, UAB, Professor and Chair, Department of Sociology.
