UAB, represented by TREND Lab, is member of a consortium of 10 Universities that was awarded the Region 4 University Transportation Center by the U.S. Department of Transportation on December 5, 2016.  The Southeastern Transportation Research, Innovation, Development and Education Center (STRIDE) consortium grant will provide $14 million for the next five years, towards developing novel strategies for reducing traffic congestion.

Dr. Lily Elefteriadou, Professor at the University of Florida, serves as the Director of the consortium and Dr. Virginia Sisiopiku, Associate Professor of Transportation Engineering and Director of TREND Lab at UAB, is the Associate Director of the consortium at UAB. The STRIDE consortium will address traffic congestion through the use of new technologies available in vehicles, telecommunications capabilities, and shared autonomy in transportation.

“Building on our earlier partnership with STRIDE, this new grant will expand our research on congestion management, a core area of expertise of the UAB TREND Lab housed in the Civil Engineering department” said Dr. Sisiopiku.  “UAB research in 2017 will focus on a. Technology influence on travel demand and behaviors; b. Performance measurement and management using connected and automated vehicle data; and c. Work zone planning, design, and operations for reduced congestion” she added.
