For more than a month each spring, a vibrant celebration takes place across the campus of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Indiafest is a series of events that include dancing, lectures, art, film, music, all honoring Birmingham’s Indian culture.

Sanjay Singh,PhD, a native of Calcutta, says only at UAB could a celebration like this take place. And he’s especially delighted that events such as this are open to the public free of charge. For the 2017 Indiafest, UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center collaborated with the College of Arts and Sciences’ Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts and Department of Art and Art History, as well as art and culture partners in the Birmingham community, including the Birmingham Museum of Art.

“There is no other institution that could have hosted an event like Indiafest. No one even comes close to promoting global diversity like UAB does,” says Dr. Singh.

In an effort to ensure the continuation of multicultural celebrations like Indiafest, Dr. Singh and his wife Dora Singh have created an endowment at the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham to help fund global programming through Alys Stephens Center in perpetuity, pending approval by the Alabama University Board of Trustees. He says Alys Stephens Center is “a gem in our community.”

“I hope my gift is a small part of helping international programs,” Dr. Singh said, noting that students and faculty at UAB represent more than 100 countries around the globe.

Dr. Singh’s own connection to UAB began in 1993 when he moved to Birmingham. For twenty years, he was a faculty member, teaching and supervising theses for Master's and Doctoral students in the Schools of Business, Engineering, Computer Science, and Healthcare Administration.

Dr. Singh is a member of the President's Campaign Executive Committee and serves on the board of the Alys Stephens Center.

Dr. Singh has also given back to UAB through the establishment of the Dora and Sanjay Singh Endowed Research Fund in Information Systems, a fund that benefits research in Collat School of Business Department of Management, Information Systems and Quantitative Methods. Additionally, Dr. Singh and Dora Singh have given a gift to the UAB Football Facilities Fund at the UAB Athletics Foundation in honor of Nancy and Ray Watts, pending board approval. In 2011, Dr. Singh received the Honorary Alumni Award through the Alumni Leadership Recognition Awards.
