The Black Graduate Student Association was founded on UAB's campus in 1993. Since its inception, the BGSA has been dedicated to serving local Birmingham communities and the student population at UAB. Our organization is dedicated to the pursuit of academic excellence and social awareness with respect to minorities at UAB. The experience of being black in America and a graduate student is a unique one and can be isolating. The BGSA provides a support system to help retain black graduate students and prepare them for the post-graduation transition.

Q. Who is eligible to join/participate?
A. Any graduate or professional student, recent UAB graduate, Birmingham young professional or faculty member interested in the success and advancement of black graduate students is welcome to join!
Q. What does BGSA do?
A. We sponsor a number of forums, community service projects, social events, professional development events and fundraisers for scholarships throughout the fall and spring semesters. Our General Body Meeting is the first Tuesday of the month during the fall semester in LRC 249, at 6 pm.
Q. What are the benefits of joining?
A. There's no need to code switch with us! You can be yourself among a group that understands your experience. We're also pretty chill to kick back with. BGSA is here for the studying, the celebrations, the personal growth and the challenges we have to fight through to achieve excellence and success.
