The Graduate Student Government (GSG) is an organization designed to promote and protect the interest of all graduate students, to provide a forum to express graduate student concerns on academic and nonacademic issues and to enhance the quality of education and research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

All students enrolled in the Graduate School are invited, encouraged and welcomed to participate in the GSG. If you would like to become a senator, you must be nominated by your program director via email to the current GSG Secretary, Jessica Jasien (jjasien@uab.edu) or directly to gsg@uab.edu.

What does the GSG do?

GSG includes different committees, which conduct events and workshops designed to help graduate students academically, professionally and socially. Briefly, the GSG organizes professional development and leadership events, community service events, social activities and recruitment events. The GSG also funds different graduate student organizations in order to help them achieve their goals. All senators meet monthly on the first Wednesday of every month, while executive committee members meet twice a month.

What are the benefits of joining?

The GSG is an outstanding organization that allows personal, academic, professional and social growth of its members through leadership and community-related opportunities. By joining the GSG, you will have input into campus-wide activities and events; preference for travel grants; leadership development opportunities; funding for activities through committees and student organizations; professional networking opportunities; an opportunity to serve on University-wide committees and taskforces; and inside information about university affairs.

Who are some well-known alumni who were part of UAB's GSG?

The 2016-17 GSG President, Haley Kendrick, currently serves as the Director of campus operations at Innovate Birmingham.

The 2017-18 GSG President, Garrett Stephens, currently works as Special Assistant to the Senator and Defense Legislative Correspondent in the Office of Senator Doug Jones in Washington, DC, to accelerate his political career.

The 2017-18 GSG Communication and Marketing Chair, Sarah Griffin, works as a Legislative Liaison at Alabama State House in Montgomery.

The 2017-18 GSG Community Service Chair, Marlee Hayes, works as an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) Research Participant at USFDA Gulf Coast Seafood Laboratory at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in Dauphin Island.
